This trilingual anthology (Haitian Creole, English and French), characteristic of Haitian culture, is important because it honors the spirit of the land, multiculturalism and the diversity of the country. It explores the past, present and future of Haiti, as experienced or imagined by its inhabitants over the past four decades.

Jan Mapou (Jean-Marie Denis) is an author, playwright, director, and arts advocate. He is one of the founders of the Haitian Creole Movement, which began in Haiti in 1965. Anba mapou-a is a collection of six short stories in Haitian Creole.

Félix Morisseau-Leroy translated the classical Greek tragedy Antigone into Haitian Creole, adapting the characters and context for Haitian culture. According to Moira Fradinger, Morrisseau-Leroy uses the Creole language and Vodou to 'rethink the drama of the Haitian Revolution and modernization' in and on local terms. His conscious assertion of the legitimacy of Creole as a valid language of high culture, and one appropriate for the (re)production of a Greek classic, was a political act, as was his use of Vodou.

Written in a provocative experimental style, with a myriad of voices and combining myth, poetry, allegory, magical realism, and social realism, Dézafi tells the tale of a plantation that is run and worked by zombies for the financial benefit of the living owner. The owner's daughter falls in love with a zombie and facilitates his transformation back into fully human form, leading to a rebellion that challenges the oppressive imbalance that had robbed the workers of their spirit. With the walking dead and bloody cockfights (the "dézafi" of the title) as cultural metaphors for Haitian existence, Frankétienne’s novel is ultimately a powerful allegory of political and social liberation.

Pawòl Kreyòl: Literati Kreyòl an Ayiti,1750-2000 is an historical anthology of Haitian Creole works of literature recorded as early as 1750 or 1757. According to Isabelle Airey in their dissertation The Nexus Between Language and Identity in the Caribbean/Caribbean American Context, this text is essential to the study of Haitian Creole literature; Christophe Charles, the editor of Pawòl Kreyòl, affirms that “yon istwa literati Kreyòl an Ayiti se avantou yon istwa lang Kreyòl-la an Ayiti.” (“The history of Creole literature is the history of the Creole language in Haiti.") This anthology is in Haitian Creole with the introduction and appendixes primarily in French.
