Hawaii (Hawaiian: Hawai'i) is a group of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean. The islands were annexed as a U.S. territory in 1900. Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state on August 21, 1959. It is the only U.S. state located outside North America and the only island state. A common Hawaiian explanation of the name of Hawaiʻi is that it was named for Hawaiʻiloa, a legendary figure from a Hawaiian myth. He is said to have discovered the islands when they were first settled.
