Cleveland, Ohio, has been the U.S. hub for all things related to Hungary and Hungarians since the nineteenth century. Today, Cleveland's Hungarian community remains vibrant and continues to value and preserve its heritage despite the ongoing impact of economic, social and cultural changes, demographic shifts and gentrification. In this work, historian Endre Szentkiralyi examines the concept of "being Hungarian in Cleveland," using a variety of methodologies and drawing on his 47 years as an active member of that community. He looks at the community historically and sociologically via in-depth research into its language and literature, culture, and traditions, with a focus on the years from 1950 to the present. Today, though Cleveland's unique Hungarian community is shrinking, its extensive roots--significantly shaped by succeeding generations--run deep, and Szentkiralyi's research attests to the fact that it is still thriving. Kaper Kóntri (henceforth Copper Country) is the first book-length study of Hungarian immigrants who during the first two decades of the twentieth-century worked in the copper mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northernmost part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It offers a variety of topics in social history and ethnography that run the gamut from genealogy, company statistics, mine accidents, strikes, foodways and religious strife. It has nine substantive chapters, photographs, three maps, and references cited. Three adventurous Hungarians, Julius Bruskay, Adam Mocsary and Theodore Zboray came down south to Louisiana to survey the situation looking for a better life for themselves and their families. They worked in the mill saving as much money as possible from their salaries. It proved to be a better existence than that experienced in the industrial cities of the northern United States. After working here and saving enough money to help pay their fares, they informed their families and friends in the northern cities that the land for sale by the lumber company was suitable for farming and strongly encouraged those families to join them. ...
