Between 1848 and 1914, approximately 100,000 Jews emigrated from Hungary to the United States. They came in two waves. The first group, catalyzed by the 1848 revolutions against the Austrian monarchy, consisted mainly of political dissidents and well-educated, cosmopolitan, middle-class Jews seeking greater personal, religious, and political freedoms in the New World. The second and much larger group, which began to arrive around 1880, consisted primarily of poor peasants and unskilled labourers, beckoned to America by the promise of vast economic opportunity. - Provided by publisher.

By addressing the enigma of the exceptional success of Hungarian emigrant scientists and telling their life stories, Brilliance in Exile combines scholarly analysis with fascinating portrayals of uncommon personalities. István and Balazs Hargittai discuss the conditions that led to five different waves of emigration of scientists from the early twentieth century to the present. Although these exodes were driven by a broad variety of personal motivations, the attraction of an open society with inclusiveness, tolerance, and - needless to say - better circumstances for working and living, was the chief force drawing them abroad. While emigration from East to West is a general phenomenon, this book explains why and how the emigration of Hungarian scientists is distinctive. The high number of Nobel Prizes among this group is only one indicator. Multicultural tolerance, a quickly emerging, considerably Jewish, urban middle class, and a very effective secondary school system were positive legacies of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Multiple generations, shaped by these conditions, suffered from the increasingly exclusionist, intolerant, antisemitic, and economically stagnating environment, and chose to go elsewhere. This is a social history of refugees escaping Hungary after 1919. Largely Jewish and German before World War I, the Hungarian middle class was torn by the disastrous war, the partitioning of Hungary in the Treaty of Trianon, and the numerus clausus act XXV in 1920 that seriously curtailed the number of Jews admitted to higher education. Emotionally prepared by their earlier threatening experiences in Hungary, they were quick to recognize the need to uproot themselves again. Many fled to the United States where their double exile catalyzed the USA into an active enemy of Nazi Germany and stimulated the transplantation of European modernism into American art and music. To their surprise, the refugees also encountered anti-Semitism in the USA. The book is based on extensive archival work in the USA and Germany. - Provided by publisher.

The first part of the book contains information about emigrants and emigration, the second part presents conditions in the United States. The years discussed in this book were years of moving about within the United States and between the old country and the new one. These were also years of ethnic grouping. Many of the ethnic minorities living in Hungary at the time also emigrated to America. At first mostly men migrated, later women joined them too. There were high rates of circular migration, and it was not uncommon to come to the U.S. repeatedly for a few years to work. More people migrated from those areas of Hungary that were further away from industrial centers.

This publication includes ten lectures presented at the American-Hungarian bi-national symposium, held on December 12-14, 1983, in Budapest, Hungary. The books also contains the opening address by Nicholas Salgó, the United States Ambassador to Hungary.
One of the lecturers pointed out that the number of Americans who regarded themselves as Hungarian showed a sharp increase from 600,000 in the 1970 census to 1,700,000 in the 1980 census. János Horváth reasoned that Hungarian-Americans take pride in their Hungarian heritage and attributed this to the influence, achievements and increased visibility of Hungarian intellectuals in America.
