The Idaho Territory was admitted as the 43rd state of the union on July 3, 1890. It ranks 14th among the 50 U.S. states in terms of total area. The name Idaho is thought to be derived from a Shoshone phrase meaning "gem of the mountains." Decades before national suffrage, Idaho became the fourth state in the country to give women the vote.
