Indigenous American Artists: Collection Connections

Artists in the Collections

This section lists individual Indigenous American artists represented in the Library's Prints & Photographs collections. Clicking on a name will take you to search results for the known holdings of work by these artists in the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog. Given the focus of this guide we have noted tribal affiliations based whenever possible on how artists self-identify. We acknowledge that creators often have multiple heritages and identities that may be more complex than described and welcome any corrections through our Ask a Librarian service.

The Library of Congress collections include over 50 artist prints published by Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA), an arts facility located on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. Artists include Marwin Begaye, Raven Chacon, Yatika Starr Fields, Jeffrey Gibson, James Lavadour, Larry McNeil, Lillian Pitt, Wendy Red Star, Kay WalkingStick, Marie Watt, and others, each named in individually in the list below, working primarily in lithography as well as monotype, woodcut, and other techniques. Attracting both Native and non-Native artists from the U.S. and internationally to its printmaking studio, Crow’s Shadow Press, CSIA seeks to provide “a creative conduit for educational, social, and economic opportunities for Native Americans through artistic development.”

Recent additions to the photography collections have included bodies of work from Lewis deSoto’s Empire and Power series and Shelley Niro’s Battlefields of My Ancestors, and individual works by Sky Hopinka, "I think of my home tonight..." from the Breathings series, and Dakota Mace, So' (Stars).
