Published in New York by Greenwood Press in 1987, Dirk Hoerder's three-volume work is considered a classic reference work for researchers interested in Italian American studies and especially in the identification and preservation of the knowledge of ethnic-language periodicals published in the United States between the mid-nineteenth to the twentieth century. The work identifies twenty-three language groups from various European countries and provides different language sections with introductory essays per section relating to the particular ethnic group in question. Researched by the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (New Jersey), this work is a survey of the Italian language publications in the United States. The survey was the result of work performed by various contributors distributed across the United States who researched, studied, and collected information on all the local Italian American periodicals that they could find. In its entirety the work information gathered in this survey was executed over almost a year from February to September 1942. In its basic structure, the survey is divided into nine geographical sections: 1) Metropolitan New York 2) New York State 3) Philadelphia and New Jersey 4) Middle Western States and Pennsylvania, excluding Philadelphia 5) Southern States 6) Chicago 7) Plains States 8) Mountain States and 9) Pacific Coast States. Each section provides bibliographical information for each periodical including: its frequency, address, publisher, editor, subscription price, and circulation. The data is followed by a brief comment concerning the main topics covered by the periodicals as well as their prevailing tone and intended audiences. Some of these comments express subjective biases unfortunately, rendering this survey only useful for the hard data but not for the general and subjective opinions expressed by the researchers. In any case, the facts stated in each section can be used as reference, although cross-checking with other more accomplished and verified sources may be advisable.

In his heyday, Carlo Tresca ranked among the most important radicals and labour activists in the United States, often sharing the spotlight with Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, 'Big Bill' Haywood, and Emma Goldman. A charismatic Italian anarchist who became a folk hero to immigrant and native-born workers alike, Tresca was described by comrades as a 'freelance revolutionary' because of his independent spirit and militant activism. This book is about the Italian anarchist Andrea Salsedo (Pantelleria, Sicily, 1881-New York, 1920) whose death caused by suicide or homicide was at the center of a controversy fueling protests against the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation (BOI) and the Sacco and Vanzetti case. From generational conflicts resolved around the family table to a vibrant food-based economy of ethnic producers, importers, and restaurateurs, food was essential to the creation of an Italian American identity. Italian American foods offered not only sustenance but also powerful narratives of community and difference, tradition and innovation as immigrants made their way through a city divided by class conflict, ethnic hostility, and racialized inequalities. Drawing on a vast array of resources including popular Italian American periodicals such as Il Progresso Italo-Americano and La Rivista Commerciale Italo-Americana, described in this guide under the categories of cultural and trade periodicals, Cinotto argues that Italian immigrants created a distinctive culture of food as a symbolic response to the needs of immigrant life, from the struggle for personal and group identity to the pursuit of social and economic power. Italians in Chicago was the first book by Giovanni Schiavo, a leading scholar as well as pioneer in Italian American studies when they were far from being an established field of research. In Italian Immigrant Radical Culture, Marcella Bencivenni delves into the history of the sovversivi, a transnational generation of social rebels, and offers a fascinating portrait of their political struggle as well as their milieu, beliefs, and artistic creativity in the United States. The Sacco-Vanzetti affair is the most famous and controversial case in American legal history. It divided the nation in the 1920s, and it has continued to arouse deep emotions, giving rise to an enormous literature. Few writers, however, have consulted anarchist sources for the wealth of information available there about the movement of which the defendants were a part. Now Paul Avrich, the preeminent American scholar of anarchism, looks at the case from this new and valuable perspective. This book treats a dramatic and hitherto neglected aspect of the cause célèbre that raised, according to Edmund Wilson, "almost every fundamental question of our political and social system."

Born in 1878 to a wealthy Ukrainian family, Angelica Balabanoff broke ties with her parents and left for Europe to become one of the leading female socialists of the early 20th century. Just five feet tall, plump and plain, she was rumored to be a lover of Mussolini, Lenin, and Trotsky. Returning to Russia at the beginning of the October Revolution, she became one of the few women to occupy high-ranking positions within the all-male Bolshevik government, later fleeing Russia in disagreement with Lenin's politics. She was accused by European and American secret services of promoting communist propaganda, and by the Soviets of disloyalty. She lived in small dormitory-like rooms, moving on average every two years with her two suitcases of important documents. She died in Rome at the age of 96, concluding her 65-year career by supporting Giuseppe Saragat in his quest to become president of Italy. During her nomadic life, state and police agencies in the countries she visited compiled documents on her. The author draws on this extensive, scattered archive in this first biography of Balabanoff.

This book by Daniel Bender, published by Rutgers University Press in 2004, revisits the history of immigrant garment workers at the turn of the century in New York providing new interpretations of the significant contributions of ethnic garment workers to the American labor history.
In the early 1900s, thousands of immigrants labored in New York's Lower East Side sweatshops, enduring work environments that reformers deemed the worst examples of Progressive-Era American industrialization needing to be abolished. Bender's is the first work to investigate the origins of sweatshops in relation to the dangers of industrialization and immigration, from the point of view of the language used to define the sweatshop and shape the first anti-sweatshop campaign. This work is relevant also for insight into the activities of Italian women immigrants who abundantly populated the garment industry's history in New York. Italian immigrants alongside Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia contributed strongly to the organization of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), a major player in early twentieth century's American labor history. From the standpoint of Italian American periodicals, ILGWU had its own periodical with sections in various languages including Italian (see the Italian American periodicals guide under "Trade and Labor Periodicals": New York, 1860-1920). Another important periodical in this context of labor organizations and Italian immigrants, was Justice which also had an Italian version Giustizia (see guide under "Trade and Labor Periodicals": New York, 1860-1920). Finally, Bender's book makes reference to an Italian American public figure, union leader, and antifascist organizer Luigi Antonini (1883-1968), president of Local 89 of the ILGWU and sponsor of the Italian American periodical Il Nuovo Mondo (see guide under "Political Periodicals": New York, 1921-1950).
While Bender's book delves into Jewish immigrant history, it provides one of the first strong treatments of the history of Italian American garment workers in New York, hence contextual reference for some of the political and trade/labor periodicals featured in this guide.

In the first book-length history of the Italian American syndicalist movement--the Italian Socialist Federation--Michael Miller Topp presents a new way of understanding the Progressive Era labor movement in relation to migration, transnationalism, gender, and class identity. In turn-of-the-century New York, Italian immigrant daughters spent their youth in factories while their mothers did irregular wage labor as well as domestic work at home. By the I940s, Italian-American girls were in school, socializing and preparing for white-collar jobs that would not begin until they were eighteen. Drawing on a range of sources from censuses to high school yearbooks, Miriam Cohen examines shifting patterns in the family roles, work lives, and schooling of two generations of Italian-American women. Paying particular attention to the importance of these women's pragmatic daily choices, she documents how major social and political changes helped create new opportunities and constraints for the second generation. While financial need was a powerful factor in determining the behavior of the first generation women, Cohen shows, they and their daughters succeeded in adapting family survival strategies to new work patterns. Once the second generation was married, their careers mirrored those of the first in many ways: they raised children, cared for the home, and took on paid employment when necessary. Unlike their mothers, however, these Italian-American wives could also participate in the growing consumerism surrounding home and childcare. Throughout, Cohen compares the changing Italian-American experience with that of Jewish women, discovering significant similarities in these experiences by 1950.
