The following bibliography is divided into reference works and secondary sources. With the exception of a handful of works, many books listed in the two following bibliographic categories do not refer to Italian American periodicals strictly speaking. Published research on Italian American periodicals is more often included in works that refer to Italian immigration history and Italian American culture. In recent years, far more research on Italian American periodicals has appeared in specialized journals such as The International Migration Review, Italian American Review, Journal of American Ethnic History, and other journals cited throughout this guide and available through the Library of Congress's electronic resources (see the "Databases & External Websites" section of this guide).
Among the reference works listed below, the biographic dictionaries are useful to identify some of the major editors and contributors to the Italian American periodicals. The only two bibliographies listed are the most thorough reference sources dedicated to Italian American periodicals. Lastly, the encyclopedias dedicated to Italian American culture in general treat the periodicals in various entries providing accessible and in some cases more detailed information on many of the major periodicals featured in this guide. The secondary sources in this bibliography are books publishing exhaustive research by American and Italian scholars that deal with a variety of topics related to Italian immigrants, political movements, and other complex cultural aspects of Italian American history. Within these secondary sources, the history of the Italian-language press is often treated in relation to political, social, cultural, and economic aspects predominant in various Italian American communities across the United States.
