Jewish Composers: Resources in the Library of Congress Music Division

History and Criticism

Numerous historical and current books are available about the relationships between Jewish composers and specific compositions, politics, culture, world events, and other art forms. Use these works to contextualize and enrich the music you study, perform, and program. Titles represent the state of scholarship and authors' points of view during the time periods in which they were written. Works in music history and criticism are also useful to learn about the lives and worlds of composers who converted from Judaism to Christianity for their own safety and professional and social acceptance.

These resources have call numbers that begin with ML (Literature about Music). The following selected titles link to fuller bibliographic information in the Library of Congress Online Catalog and can be used in the Performing Arts Reading Room. You can also search for them in your local institution's holdings or request inter-library loans.
