Jewish Composers: Resources in the Library of Congress Music Division

Music Manuscripts

Ernest Bloch, composer. Schelomo: rapsodie hébraïque pour violoncelle solo et grand orchestre. 1916. Moldenhauer Archive, Library of Congress Music Division.

The Library of Congress Music Division holds a wealth of music manuscripts central to Western classical repertoire by Jewish composers. These works are for soloists, chamber ensembles, and large ensembles. The manuscript scores include secular music, religious music, and music based on Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino poems, songs, and melodies.

The Music Division acquires such items through gifts, purchases, and commissioning funds. Music manuscripts can be individually cataloged or part of larger special collections.

Titles link to fuller bibliographic information in the Library of Congress Online Catalog and special collection findings aids when available. Items without online catalog records may be found in the Performing Arts Reading Room card catalog and by contacting reference specialists via Ask a Librarian.
