The first release of the online collection contains approximately 1,000 items that yield a total of about 5,000 images. These items date from 1899 to 1981, with most from the 1920s through the 1950s, and were selected from Copland's music sketches, correspondence, writings, and photographs. Celebrating the centennial of the birth of the American composer Aaron Copland (1900-1990), the multi-format Aaron Copland Collection, from which the online collection derives, spans the years 1910 to 1990 and includes approximately 400,000 items documenting the multifaceted life of an extraordinary person who was composer, performer, teacher, writer, conductor, commentator, and administrator.

Following the professional lives of the husband-wife artistic duo, this presentation features a wide variety of materials, including manuscripts, scores, scripts, photographs, sound recordings and video clips from the Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine Collection. Kaye, a multi-faceted entertainer, worked his way from performing at summer resorts to starring in feature films and conducting major symphony orchestras. Fine, a composer and writer, went from writing revues at small theatres to composing music for Danny’s studio films and teaching at Yale University.

This site features nineteen early manuscript compositions by composer Ernest Bloch (1880-1959), spanning the period from 1896 to 1916, and comprising a portion of the Ernest Bloch Collection at the Library of Congress.

The career of Irving Fine (1914-1962), composer, conductor, writer, and academic, is documented in the Library of Congress Music Division by approximately 4,350 items from the Irving Fine Collection. Comprising manuscript and printed music, sketchbooks, writings, personal and business correspondence, scrapbooks, programs, clippings, and sound recordings, the collection contains most of the creative work of this colleague of Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.

Bernstein, arguably the most prominent figure in American classical music of the second half of the twentieth century, made his impact as a conductor, as a composer of classical and theater music, and as an educator through books, conducting students at Tanglewood, and especially through various televised lecture series that helped define the potentials of that medium. The online Leonard Bernstein collection makes available a significant selection of correspondence both to and from Bernstein, musical sketches for several of his major works, writings, including the scripts for his Young People's Concerts, Thursday Evening Previews, Omnibus, and Ford Presents, his scrapbooks, photographs, and audio-visual materials.

The Moldenhauer Archives at the Library of Congress contain approximately 3,500 items documenting the history of Western music from the medieval period through the modern era and is the richest composite gift of musical documents ever received by the Library. This online presentation includes representative examples of more than 130 items from the Archives including many complete works. In addition, the book’s inventory of the Archives appears as a finding aid. Jewish composers in the digital collection include Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Joseph Joachim, George Rochberg, and Arnold Schoenberg.

Mackenzie Pierce analyzes one of the earliest operas that commemorate the Holocaust, "The Anointed" (1951) by Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern. Leann Osterkamp discussed Bernstein's piano works, including what each piece reveals about his compositional process and the biographical and historical context in which he wrote the music. Nicholas Alexander Brown discusses Irving Fine and the American Woodwind Quintet as part of the Library's celebration of the composer's 100th birthday Irving Fine, described by Aaron Copland as "the greatest of us all." A leading voice in the American Neoclassical School, Fine was a member of the Boston Group of composers--Arthur Berger, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss and Harold Shapero--who were key figures in American music during the mid-20th century.
