The Library of Congress has been digitizing unique primary source collection materials since the 1990s. The following selection of digital collections focus on Jewish, Hebrew, and Yiddish materials, as documented in a number of the Center's field survey and occupational folklife collections.
Story Maps at the Library of Congress are immersive web presentations that tell the incredible stories of the Library’s collections through narrative, multimedia, and interactive maps. The American Folklife Center publishes Story Maps that provide curated access to our online collections.
The first Story Map below will aid in navigation of selected digital collections presenting the Center's field surveys. The second Story Map, "Holy Land Photography: Mid-19th Century Photos of the Middle East by Francis Frith," presents photography by Francis Frith, connecting the 37 plates in the book, Sinai and Palestine, to their geographic locations in modern-day Egypt, Israel, West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria. While this Story Map draws largely from collection materials from the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library, this presentation provides a historical and political context to the various AFC archival collections that document Jewish culture abroad. Lastly, Homegrown Pride: Exploring Chicago’s Cultural Centers in 1977 and Today, takes a tour of community centers, museums, and their neighborhoods in 1977 Chicago (as documented in the Chicago Ethnic Arts Project Collection), and traces the history of Jewish immigrants to the city in the 19th and 20th centuries.
