Members of Musicians from Marlboro discuss their work as chamber musicians, the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont and the creative environment at summer music festivals. This interview was presented in conjunction with a performance by Musicians from Marlboro at the Library. The accompanying concert includes a performance of Brahms's Piano Quartet no. 2 in A major, op. 26 (See the "Concerts' section of this page).

Cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and pianist Simon Trpčeski perform Beethoven's Sonata in C major, op. 102, no. 1, Brahms' Sonata in F major, op. 99, and Chopin's Sonata in G minor, op .65.

Acclaimed horn player Eric Ruske was joined by violinist Jennifer Frautschi and pianist Gloria Chien for a performance of horn trios by Ligeti and Brahms, as well as the Hindemith Alto Horn Sonata and Perschichetti "Parable VIII" for solo horn, op. 120.

Pianist Jenny Lin is joined by soprano Marlissa Hudson and violinist Cornelius Dufallo in an homage to pianist/composer Artur Schnabel. Best known as a pianist who recorded and edited Beethoven's music, Schnabel was also a composer whose music ranges from the high-Romantic to the uncompromisingly modern. Examples of each will be performed, along with music by Beethoven and Brahms. Violist Kim Kashkashian (performing on violas from the Library's Stradivari instrument collection) and Hungarian pianist Peter Nagy perform Schumann's "Fantasiestucke," op. 73, for viola and piano; Bartok's "Rhapsody" no. 1 for violin and piano, BB 94a, Sz. 87; Tihanyi's "Eight Invocations to the Lunar Phases"; and Brahms' Sonata for viola and piano in E-flat major, op. 120, no. 2.

Violinist Joan Kwuon leads a quartet of distinguished world-class players from the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music. The program featured Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478 and Brahms' Piano Quartet no. 1 in G minor, op. 25.

Two "Musicians from Marlboro" concerts during the 2015-2016 season make a bow to the Library's historic relationship with the Marlboro Festival and its founders, evoking concerts performed here by Adolph Busch, Rudolf Serkin, Marcel Moyse and other festival luminaries. This program is built around Krzysztof Penderecki's 1993 Quartet for clarinet and string trio. Meditative and nostalgic, with a final movement marked Abschied ("Farewell"), the work summons faint echoes of Vienna. The concert closes with the poignant, autumnal Brahms clarinet quintet.

Musicians from Marlboro performs works representative of the Viennese schools. On the program are Haydn's Quartet in G minor ("The Rider"), op. 74, no. 3, HIII: 74; Webern's String Quartet (1905); and Brahms' Piano Quartet no. 2 in A major, op. 26. The manuscript of the Webern 1905 quartet is housed in the Hans Moldenhauer Archive in the Library of Congress. This concert is presented in association with the Bill and Mary Meyer Concert Series of the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries.

Paul Lewis, one of the world's great interpreters of Beethoven and Schubert, performs a favorite Haydn sonata and three autumnal gems by Brahms. Beethoven's monumental Diabelli Variations were an overachiever's response to Anton Diabelli's crowd-sourcing of variations from some 51 composers, who all contributed at least one variation, including Czerny, Moscheles, Franz Schubert and the young Franz Liszt. A conversation with the eminent pianist follows the performance. The Schumann Trio plays works of Mozart (Trio in E-flat Major, K. 498, "Kegelstatt"), Zwilich (Romance for Violin and Piano, Library of Congress commission), Marchenerzahlungen (Op. 132) and Brahms (Clarinet Trio in A minor, op. 114, arranged for viola by Michael Tree).

The Vienna Piano Trio performs the music of Haydn, Schoenberg and Brahms. The Library of Congress holds the manuscripts for the Brahms trio, Schoenberg's "Verklärte Nacht" and the Steuermann transcription of that work.
