Introduction

The digital collections of the Library of Congress contain a wide variety of material associated with John Adams. Born in Massachusetts in 1735, Adams was a member of the Continental Congress (1774-77) and served as a diplomat (1778-88) in France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. He was also elected the first vice president of the United States (1789-97) and second president of the United States (1797-1801).
