Born in Virginia on March 29, 1790, Tyler served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1811-16 and 1839), U.S. House of Representatives (1816-21), and U.S. Senate (1827-36). He also served as Governor of Virginia (1825-27). In 1841, Tyler was elected Vice President of the United States on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison. After the death of President Harrison on April 4, 1841, Tyler took the oath of office two days later and became the tenth president of the United States (1841-45). Tyler did not seek reelection. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate House of Representatives (1861) until his death on January 18, 1862.
