For researchers hoping to copy and publish images from the Kern County Survey Collection, information about how to assess rights to images in the collection and how to obtain both reference and quality copies is provided below.
Photographs in the Kern County, California, Photographic Views by Carleton Watkins collection were made for publication in the U.S. more than 95 years ago and have no known restrictions on publication.
Researchers can download existing digital files. Digital copies of images, all of which have a Rights Advisory of "No known restrictions on publication" display and are available for downloading as jpeg and tiff files no matter where you are searching from. Some of the images were digitized many years ago and are not high resolution.
Researchers can make digital copies from microfilm in the reading room. If granted access to original photographs, reference copies can be made by photographing with a hand-held camera. A link to the full policy on hand-held camera copying is provided below.
It is possible to purchase quality scans of individual items through Library of Congress Duplication Services. In placing an order, researchers should cite the LOT number (LOT 3379), an item number if one has been identified, and preferably include a reference copy to ensure accurate fulfillment of the request. A link to the Duplication Services web site is provided below.
