The Kluge Chair in American Law and Governance at the John W. Kluge Center focuses on legal, constitutional, and political issues related to the institutions of American government. The Chair makes use of the world’s largest law library and the Library’s unique collection of manuscripts on the formation and development of the American Republic during their residence. The Chair in American Law and Governance is occupied by scholars of great accomplishment chosen for their intellectual and communicative abilities. Their presence provides an opportunity for ongoing dialogue with political leaders on matters of importance to civic and political life. This guide provides access to selected print and online resources related to current and previous Chairs.
Andrea Louise Campbell is the Arthur and Ruth Sloan Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her research interests include American politics, political behavior, public opinion, and political inequality, particularly their intersection with social welfare policy, health policy, and tax policy.
Campbell’s project at the Kluge Center, “How Americans Think about Taxes”, examined the interplay between public policy and public opinion in the development and politics of American taxation over time. As Campbell explains “the dawn of public opinion polling coincided with the advent of many of the taxes we pay today: the payroll tax, the mass income tax, and the sales tax in many states”. For her project, she utilizes both historical polling as well as surveys conducted by her to evaluate how the development and structure of the American tax system has shaped citizen attitudes toward that system and toward the role of government more broadly.
