Latin American Composers: A Guide to Resources at the Library of Congress

Thematic Catalogs & Bio-Bibliographies

Thematic catalogs and bio-bibliographies provide in-depth lists of repertoire and related research materials for individual composers. Thematic catalogs include instrumentation, opus numbers, musical excerpts or incipits, and locations of extant manuscripts. Bio-bibliographies contextualize work lists within composers' lives and creative periods. Bio-bibliographies include lists of articles and books about composers as well as discographies to locate historical and contemporary recordings of musical works.

Thematic Catalogs and bio-bibliographies are ideal resources to expand your knowledge of music written by Latin American composers, whether these works have been published, or if certain works are only available in archives. Bio-bibliographies have call numbers that begin with ML (Literature about Music).

The following titles link to fuller bibliographic information in the Library of Congress Online Catalog, and can be used in the Performing Arts Reading Room. You can also search for them in your local institution's holdings or request inter-library loans.
