This section of the research guide is dedicated to external resources and is intended for future and emerging Latinx filmmakers and film scholars. Whether researching the history of Latinx filmmakers in U.S. cinema or pursuing film-related projects, this section offers a plethora of external resources for all those interested in Latinx representation in U.S. cinema. This section gathers the grants, fellowships, publications, archives and media sources, professional associations, non-profits, film festivals, and production companies that are the culmination of the decades of work accomplished by Latinx industry professionals seeking to create industry opportunities that were unavailable to them. “Resources for Aspiring Filmmakers” is only possible thanks to those advocates and organizations, and intends to serve as an introductory space to the available resources for Latinx filmmakers. This is the first resource of its kind, so please be aware that all organizations dedicated to Latinx representation in U.S. cinema may not be included in this list. Rather, this is an attempt at a full compilation of external resources for aspiring filmmakers. We hope that this resource increases awareness and access to funding and filmmaking opportunities, and we encourage all those interested to continue supporting and expanding the resources available.

Fellowships

LALIFF Inclusion Fellowship External
LALIFF’s Inclusion Fellowship Series, sponsored by NETFLIX, is an ongoing program focused on building a more inclusive and equitable industry for all members of the Latino community. This year we are doubling the number of fellows and the Fellowship will be awarded to five visionary directors that identify as Indigenous Latino and five visionary directors that identify as Afro Latino.
The ten selected participants will receive $20,000 each and mentorship from industry professionals to complete their films. Completed films will premiere at LALIFF yearly festival.
LALIFF Works In Progress External
he LALIFF Works in Progress, sponsored by Amazon Studios, is intended to support independent US based Latine filmmakers in the completion of a feature film (fiction or documentary), by granting them financial support through the final stages of post-production. The fund will support films with high production value, a distinctive directorial voice, culturally significant and commercially viable. The fund will allocate $50,000 between three projects selected through an open call. A jury of industry professionals will divide the funds among the projects, based on their post production needs.
The Latinx House Adelante Directors Fellowship External
In partnership with the Sundance Institute’s Women at Sundance program, Netflix, Shondaland, and GloNation three Latina directors participated in the inaugural Adelante Directors Fellowship, a groundbreaking program that supports up-and-coming directors’ professional development, creating a pipeline to uplift independent filmmakers as they grow in their careers and learn more about directing on a series.
The Latinx House New Writers Program External
The Latinx House is proud to announce that we are accepting the 2nd round of applications for the Bad Robot and The Black List initiative to provide writers from historically underrepresented communities with access to the Black List website (blcklst.com). Participating writers will have the opportunity to receive one free professional screenplay evaluation and one free month of hosting on the site. This program provides writers with access, opportunities, and feedback for their original work that they may not otherwise be able to acquire. Writers from historically underrepresented communities, as defined by current WGAW guidelines. Interested writers should have a completed feature film, original pilot, or original play or musical script ready to host on blcklst.com when applying for a fee waiver.
NHMC Series Scriptwriter’s Program External
For nearly twenty years, the NHMC Series Scriptwriters Program has helped
launch the careers of more than 200 Latinx writers. 10 Latinx writers nationwide are selected for a virtual 8-week intense writers lab. At the end of the program, these writers will have either a half-hour or hourlong original series pilot, which they will pitch to industry leaders. Over the 8-week course of the program, writers work with a professional writing mentor, meet and speak with professional industry writers, and connect with a community of Latinx writers. This program is virtual, to run Monday-Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings over the course of the 8 weeks. On-screen participation in all meetings is mandatory.
NHMC Netflix Created By Initiative External
To identify talent, NHMC joined forces with Netflix and five other leading organizations who are at the forefront of creating access to underrepresented creators within the industry: CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment), Native American Media Alliance, The Black TV and Film Collective, Outfest and Inevitable Foundation. Each organization nominated candidates from their own writers’ programs and Netflix selected the final recipients. The program is designed to ensure underrepresented and historically excluded talent are set up for success beyond the writers’ room. The development deals provide these writers with the opportunity to go through the studio development process and hone their projects alongside Netflix executives from the series and film teams. Additionally, all series writers will be invited to participate in a showrunner training lab designed to provide the essential skills needed to successfully run a Netflix series.
Mentorship Matters Writing Program External
Mentorship Matters is an intensive, year-long mentorship program that pairs emerging writers of color with working TV show-runners.
Femme Frontera Film Lab External
Now in its second year, Femme Frontera’s La Frontera Film Lab will select a filmmaking team to receive support for their project from conception through distribution in 2023-24. The team, comprising one woman or nonbinary filmmaker or artist/crew member from the American border region and one woman or nonbinary filmmaker or artist/crew member from the Mexican border region, is asked to complete and submit our online Lab application below. The selected team will demonstrate relevant previous filmmaking experience (at least one team member should have filmmaking experience), provide a compelling and complete documentary treatment, will demonstrate an understanding of and connection to life along the U.S.+MX border, and will articulate their intent to use film as a way to dismantle stereotypes about border communities. The selected team will collaborate in the exploration of a topic of their choosing to complete a documentary about life on the border. Throughout the course of the Lab, the team will meet monthly, via Zoom, with a facilitator and mentors, attend workshops and networking sessions, and will participate in a work-in-progress screening session. The film will automatically receive entry into the Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase.
Femme Frontera Filmmaking Grants External
As part of an on-going initiative to increase, inspire, and support short form content made by filmmakers from El Paso and Las Cruces, Femme Frontera will fund new works made by emerging and established women and non-binary filmmakers. The funds will assist these filmmakers in the creation of their short films in the El Paso and Las Cruces region. The film(s) will then be invited to screen as part of our official 2023 or 2024 Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase line up.
Femme Frontera Screenwriting Grants External
As part of an on-going initiative to increase, inspire, and support short form content made by women and non-binary filmmakers from the El Paso-Las Cruces-Juarez region, Femme Frontera will fund new works made by emerging and established women and non-binary filmmakers. The funds will assist filmmakers in the creation of a 15-30 page script. Three grants of $500 each will be awarded, with one grant allocated per city (El Paso, Texas, Las Cruces, NM, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, región de México).Grant winners will be awarded $500 to use towards the development of their screenplay. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to workshop their scripts with a team of Femme Frontera Alumni in the Summer of 2023. Workshops will consist of a digital table reading and feedback session from Femme Frontera Alumni.
Changemakers Author Cohort External
Narrative Initiative weaves the power of narrative into social justice movements to achieve long-term equity. We aim to nourish and grow long-term progress for social justice by equipping changemakers with the necessary tools, relationships, and resources to bond our communities and determine our destinies through the power of narrative. To help create new networks of opportunity, Narrative Initiative is partnering with the Unicorn Authors Club to offer this unique writing cohort for changemaker-authors.

Flamboyan Artist Fellowship
“The Flamboyan Artist Fellowship, supported by the Flamboyan Arts FundExternal, is open to artists currently residing in Puerto Rico. The grant supports the production of work that will be created and presented in Puerto Rico, in efforts to contribute to the restoration and sustainability efforts of artistic and cultural practices by artists residing on the island.”

NFA Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film
Award Amount: $10,000
The Adán Medrano Legacy Award in Film is open to emerging Latinx video/filmmakers based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. The award will support dynamic, Latinx cinema production by emerging filmmakers that contribute towards a deeper understanding of Latinx expression and identity. Applicants to the Adan Medrano Award must be prepared to elaborate on why they identify as an ‘emerging filmmaker’.
NALAC Catalyst For Change Fellowship External
The Catalyst for Change (CFC) Fellowship focuses on radical imagination as a key component of pursuing racial justice. The award is intended to catalyze community-based and artist produced visions for creative solutions to injustices.
With major support from the Surdna Foundation, NALAC is supporting Latinx artists and culture workers with the potential to utilize collaborative, community informed process, combined with their artistic practice to increase civic engagement/activism, thereby creating systemic change through artistic interventions.
NALAC Border Narrative Change Grant External
In partnership with the Ford Foundation, NALAC is will support artists/ensembles, cultural workers, collectives and organizations that embody the stories, cultural knowledge and innovation of border communities and/or migrant populations. This NALAC Border Narrative Change Grant will support new or existing impact work led by arts and culture leaders on both sides of the border that can transform the perceptions and dominant narratives of the U.S./Mexico border. The cohort of award recipients will also receive training and technical assistance to improve and expand their capacity to use documentation, storytelling, arts and other forms of artistic and creative expression to advance their organizing and advocacy agendas beyond the funding period of these awards.
MACEF Filmmaker Production Grant External
The goal of the Filmmaker Grant, directed by Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz, is to promote the production of such stories. Individuals already in the industry, including film students at graduate level, who have great stories to tell and need funds to finish their short film, feature-length film, proof of concept film or TV pilot before putting it on the market or presenting it to film studios, are encouraged to apply. The applicant to this grant can be of any ethnicity or background, but the production team must include at least one producer, writer, director and lead actor who identifies as Mexican-American or Chicana/o of any generation or mixed ethnicity. Grantees will have their film highlighted at the next Mexican-American Film & Television Festival.
MACEF Tuition Filmmaker Scholarships External
In partnership with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, MACEF has negotiated $60,000 in scholarships funds available annually to candidate students of any background, who live in the United States and have demonstrated commitment to change the stereotypical Mexican-American narrative to a more fair, positive and realistic narrative and to educate the community about the many contributions the Mexican-American culture and people have given to America. Funds will be applied to the student’s tuition directly by UCLA upon acceptance to UCLA TFT.
The TELACU/USC LAA Cinematic Arts Scholarship External
This scholarship will provide a $20,000 scholarship to (1) student attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts who wants to further their education in the film and television industry. This application is open to any graduate student of the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Students of Mexican-American descent, including mixed ethnicity, will be given special consideration. The application consists of completing a Google form and emailing requested supporting documentation.Purpose: There is a biased perception and stigma that exists associated with being of Mexican descent in the US, and the media has played a large part in this. No other Latino group has endured 200 years of abuse and identity defamation. Because films, TV and streaming series have a tremendous impact on the narrative, perception and reputation of our community, MACEF, a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization, has chosen to promote positive content, as well as foster future Mexican-American filmmakers in order to proactively change the narrative.
MACEF/American Film Institute Tuition Scholarship External
In partnership with the American Film Institute, MACEF has negotiated $60,000 in scholarships funds available annually to candidate students of any background, who live in the United States and have demonstrated commitment to change the stereotypical Mexican-American narrative to a more fair, positive and realistic narrative and to educate the community about the many contributions the Mexican-American Culture and people have given to America. Funds will be applied to student’s tuition directly by AFI upon acceptance.Applicants will be assessed on grades, experience, demonstrable skills and financial needs. We are looking to greatly expand this program.Submit a simplified application signaling your interest and intention to be considered for this scholarship. You may do so either before or after you are accepted at AFI. Make sure you inform us that you have been accepted as soon as possible so we may inform AFI of your interest in receiving this scholarship.
MACEF Filmmaker Mentorship Program External
A quarterly lecture/seminar by an acclaimed filmmaker at a classroom setting in Studio City will be followed by an opportunity for 20 chosen young filmmaker students or recent grads to meet and pair seasoned, experienced and successful Mexican-Americans in different areas related to filmmaking. These relationships and the cooperation between them will accelerate their professional growth and provide much-needed role models and community support.

IBF Classic Fund External
The IBF Classic funding scheme offers grants to filmmakers from and living in a country on the IBF Classic Country List. Support is available for documentary projects in all stages, from starting up and developing a project to the final phases of post-production.
IBF Europe Fund External
The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) Europe – Minority Co-production funding scheme caters to documentary projects in all stages that have a director from a country on the IBF Europe Country List and that are realized through international co-productions between at least one European producer and one non-European producer. The maximum contribution per project is €40,000. The application must be submitted by the European co-producer and should involve a creative element (i.e., a key crew member or post-production service) from Europe. Through IBF Europe Minority Co-production support, the IDFA Bertha Fund aims to encourage European producers (see MEDIA sub-program countries) to participate as co-producer in high-quality documentary projects by filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania.
IDFA Bertha Fund External
The IDFA Bertha Fund (IBF) is the only fund in the world dedicated solely to stimulating and empowering the creative documentary sector in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania. Documentary films supported by the IBF express the artistic vision of filmmakers, using strong visual treatments to tell compelling stories that can reach a global audience. We take risks on unknown and seasoned filmmakers, supporting their breakthrough from marginalized positions to the most respected platforms. Many IBF-supported films have gone on to win awards across cinema and television.
Firelight Media’s William Greaves Research and Development Fund External
The William Greaves Research and Development Fund resources talented, mid-career nonfiction storytellers from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities in the United States, as well as filmmakers from Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Colombia with a particular interest in those who identify as being of Indigenous and/or of African descent. This fund is dedicated to resourcing and supporting talented storytellers with grants ranging up to $40K each to support research and development on a feature-length nonfiction film and any essential need grantees have, including healthcare and childcare costs. This fund is Firelight Media’s first international initiative and was launched to provide opportunities for filmmakers to connect, learn, and build solidarity across borders.

The FRONTLINE/Firelight Fellowship supports diverse, independent producers interested in investigative documentary filmmaking and audio storytelling. The Fellowship is offered in partnership with FRONTLINE, PBS’s award-winning investigative documentary series.

PBS/Firelight William Greaves Production Fund External
The PBS/Firelight William Greaves Production Fund will resource documentary productions by mid-career filmmakers from diverse communities in the United States that are intended for distribution on PBS through finishing funds or co-production funding.

Hulu/Firelight Kindling Fund External
The Hulu/Firelight Kindling Fund will resource three Firelight-supported filmmakers to develop an original non-fiction documentary feature film or limited series for a first look by Firelight Films and the Hulu streaming service.”
The Film Fund External
Our founder, Thomas Verdi, struggled to fund his indie film projects when he first started out. He entered contests and submitted to grants, but he quickly learned that established writers and filmmakers dominated most contests and funding opportunities.
The Film Fund was born out of this frustration with the industry. Contests, grants, and crowdfunding campaigns are great, but there's a simpler to way to fund a film. We're providing funding up to $10,000 per project for short films in a way that's a lot simpler than screenwriting contests, crowdfunding, or applying to grants, because we're sick of seeing these funding avenues dominated by industry experts.

AFI Silver Latin American Film Festival External
The AFI Latin American Film Festival is one of North America's largest and longest-running showcases of Latin American cinema. With the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, the festival celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections during National Hispanic Heritage Month. This year's wide-ranging selection of 41 films from 21 countries spans international festival favorites and award winners, local box-office hits and dynamic debuts from a new generation of Latin American filmmakers.
Chicago Latino Film Festival (CLFF) External
The Chicago Latino Film Festival is produced by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, a pan-Latino, nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino cultures by presenting a wide variety of art forms and education including film, music, dance, visual arts, comedy and theater. Imperative to the ILCC mission is to increase cultural opportunities for the Latino community, as well as, create a cultural dialogue amongst Latinos and non-Latinos to discuss universal cross-cultural experiences.
Cine+Mas SF (San Francisco Latino Film Festival)
Cine+Más SF contributes to the Bay Area’s active and diverse arts scene through the Latino Film Festival, year-round programming and special events centered on Latino arts- including the visual, performance, and literary arts. The Cine+Mas SF Latino Film Festival showcases the work of emerging and established filmmakers from the US, Latin America, Spain and Portugal. It is a celebration of the latest work coming out of the 20+ countries and the diaspora with which we share a bond.
CineFest Latino Boston External
CineFest Latino Boston Film Festival is committed to using the power of film to break stereotypes, bring cultures and communities together and reveal the complex issues affecting the Latinx community in the United States, as well as communities in Latin America and Spain.
Cine Las Americas External
Celebrating 25 years of Latinx and Indigenous films, Cine Las Americas presented the 25th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. The festival showcased new releases, narratives, documentaries, music videos, “Emergencia” youth films, and a special Hecho en Tejas (Made in Texas) series. Over 25 countries were represented and awards were given in both juried and audience favorite categories. The in-person festival continued over 5 days with red carpets and special events, providing valuable exposure for filmmakers and opportunities for the audience to experience great showcases of films.
Cinemateca Festival External
For 25 years, the Latin American Cinemateca of Los Angeles (LACLA) has proudly promoted and showcased an array of compelling feature and short films by gifted LatinX filmmakers spanning the breadth of the Americas. Our 'Nueva Onda' segment specifically highlights the fresh and inventive narratives of emerging filmmakers, presenting a platform for pioneering voices and creative minds in Latin cinema. Join us as we explore the boundaries of film, celebrating a new wave of talent and vision in the realm of LatinX and Latin American cinema.
CineSol Film Festival External
CineSol Film Festival is a showcase festival, celebrating achievement in the art of filmmaking. CineSol is dedicated to furthering the art, craft and business of screenwriters and filmmakers and recognizing their artistic contributions. CineSol supports the work of aspiring and established filmmakers by enhancing public awareness of their artistic endeavors and by encouraging dynamic and long-lasting community alliances.
Festival de Cine Latinoamericano Rosario External
The Rosario Latin American Film Festival is the most important film event in the city, a pioneer in promoting independent film screening in the region and a benchmark for many festivals, training institutes, production groups that have participated since its inception and have accompanied its growth for years. almost 3 decades now. This festival is part of and joins with various proposals to strengthen the value chain of the audiovisual industry. It is a screen that maintains its continental essence as its flag, promoting the diffusion of Latin American films and giving a prominent place to local productions, offering a differentiated programming proposal compared to that offered by commercial theaters. It enables meeting and exchange flows between creators, directors, producers, students and different audiences, expands screens and the right to access cultural assets.
Festival des 3 Continents External
Pillar of cinephilia for more than 40 years, the Festival des 3 Continents showcase numerous works and essential filmmakers from Africa, Latin America and Asia and regularly offers retrospectives that are landmarks in Europe. At the same time, the Festival’s expertise is part of a movement of reflection on contemporary cinema and its evolution.
Georgia Latino International Film Festival (GALIFF) External
The Georgia Latino Film Festival is one of the most diverse film festivals in the country produced and curated by Afro Latinos, welcoming an audience of nearly 1,500 independent actors, producers, directors, with over 30 screenings of independent, international, animated, documentary, virtual reality, music videos and short films, with submissions from all over the country and around the world. The Georgia Latino International Film Festival is not just for Latino. The Georgia Latino International Film Festival is made for all Georgians who want to immerse themselves in Latino culture and know more about life across the Caribbean, Mexico, South America and Spain.
Grand Rapids International Film Festival (GRLAFF) External
The mission of the Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival is to foster a nuanced understanding of Latin American and Latino experiences through the art of film, to provide opportunities for constructive dialogue across cultures, and to enrich the social fabric of our community.
GuadaLAjara Film Festival (GLAFF) External

The Houston Latino Film Festival is produced by a nonprofit, Latino arts

The North Carolina Latin American Film Festival was founded in 1986, by Sharon Mújica. School programs and scholarships specific to those residing in the Southern Florida locality only. Founded in 1990, the Mexican American Council (MAC) offers graduating high school students college scholarships to counter high school drop out rates and encourage college completion. MAC provides high school students mentorship and guidance through their four years of high school. Students are identified in middle school and continues to assist them through high school and into their college transition. Supporting programs include the Family Empowerment Program (FEP), the Homestead-Miami Mariachi Conservatory (HMMC), and the College Club. MAC’s comprehensive service-delivery approach, empowers farmworker families to successfully guide their children to a brighter future and quality of life. We fund our college scholarships and student services through a public-private fundraising model and our mentors generously volunteer their mentoring services to our children. MAC's multi-year commitment to at-risk youth throughout the state of Florida is an investment in the communities in which our students live. Since our inception over 11,550 children and their parents have participated in MAC programs & activities.

LIMA Coalition External
The Latinx In Media & Arts Coalition is made up of a community of accomplished brown professionals from all aspects of entertainment, we build pipelines for youth to enter careers in the entertainment industry, and help brown professionals in these fields thrive by providing them with an extensive support network. Latinx are the youngest major racial or ethnic group in the United States with an average age of twenty-eight versus the average age of forty-three for anglos in this country…There are over sixty million Latinx in the United States, yet we make up less than six percent of roles in TV, film and all streaming platforms. As LIMA, we use our collective voice and social capital to amplify issues that are of importance to our community, and activate our networks to support those causes. The Latinx experience is fluid and ever changing. LIMA is carving out our own avenues to ensure every Latinx is represented and supported.

Developing Projects: LTX Match
LTX Match is a smart, tech-based platform that aims at matching opportunities for Latino talent across many career-building sectors – ranging from Entertainment & Media to Technology. LTX Match is currently in BETA. The goal of Phase 1 is to recruit as much Latino talent and as many community organizations as possible.
LatinX in Animation External
LatinX in Animation (LXiA) represents a diverse group within the Animation, VFX, and Gaming industries dedicated to uniting a talented pool of innovators with a heart to create exceptional stories across multiple platforms. We do so by organizing activities and events focused on networking, camaraderie, community service, education, communication, and professional development. LatinX in Animation will provide the resources necessary to promote and further develop creatives and decision-makers in the Animation, VFX, and Gaming industries. Through these efforts, we hope to empower and promote the growth of Latinx diversity and minorities in all facets of the Animation, VFX, and Gaming industries by celebrating authentic stories that are About Us, Told By Us and Made By us.
Chicana Director’s Initiative External
Though Chicana has different meanings, here it means "a Latina that's connected to her roots." Any director or DP of Latina descent is welcome to join the movement.
Mission Statement: To create a solid foundation of Latina Directors and Latina DPs and successfully immerse the members into sustainable careers in the entertainment industry with fair representation and equal pay.
Brown Girls Doc Mafia External
Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) works to disrupt inequity in the film industry by nurturing, amplifying, and investing in the creative capacity and professional success of our members.
Mezcla Media Collective External
Chicago's historical and systemic lack of inclusion restricts new and emerging creatives. We seek to level the playing field by providing resources for hyper-local connection, instruction, learning and career advancement. Through our programming, we ensure women and non-binary filmmakers of color can actively participate in Chicago's bustling media production scene.

Unions and Guilds

LatinX Writers Committee Writers from the Guild for the American West (WGA) External
Our primary duty is to represent our members in negotiations with film and television producers to ensure the rights of screen, television, and digital media writers. Once a contract is in place, we enforce it. Because of the WGAW’s long-term efforts, writers receive pension and health coverage, and their financial and creative rights are protected.” Responsibilities include Credits determination; residuals monitoring, collection, and distribution; educational programs through seminars, panel discussions, and special events; advocacy work through legislation, international agreements, and public relations networks; and script registration.
DGA Latino Committee from the Director’s Guild of America External
The Latino Committee (LC) was created to advance the professional interests of our members, to heighten our visibility and career opportunities, and to promote visibility and leadership positions within the Guild. The Committee is dedicated to empowering Latinos in all Guild categories, to advocating employment equity, and to forging partnerships between Latinos and the entertainment industry. To achieve this mandate, the LC sponsors workshops, seminars, networking sessions and major events to showcase members’ talent, enhance qualifications, improve employment opportunities, recognize our contributions and increase visibility in the industry.
