Introduction

In Rhode Island, the judiciary has four general levels. The Traffic Tribunal is the lowest level, focusing on cases involving non-criminal traffic offenses. The Workers' Compensation Court, District Court, and Family Court are courts of limited jurisdiction hearing matters involving workers' compensation, lesser criminal and civil matters, and family matters. The Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction. The Rhode Island Supreme Court is the highest court in the state.
