In West Virginia, the judiciary has three general levels. The West Virginia Family Courts, West Virginia Magistrate Courts, and West Virginia Municipal Courts are the lowest level courts, focusing on cases involving specific subject matter, such as traffic violations, small claims, misdemeanor offenses, and family matters. The West Virginia Circuit Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction. The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is the highest court in the state.
