Manuscript map depicting a battle. Base map shows coastal area and port city
Luso-Hispanic World number 431. Geography and Map Division.

The islands of Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, and Tobago were ceded by France to Britain following the close of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). France temporarily recaptured these islands in the late 1770's during the period of the U.S. Revolutionary War, a conflict which had hemispheric implications. The Caribbean was one of the theaters of the war as was Central America. This elegant, well-executed French military map of the vicinity of St. George's and harbor depicts the July, 1779 attack on British held Grenada. Map includes coastline, coastal features, anchorages, a grid of St. George's, other settlements, British batteries and fortifications, roads, and pictorial representation of vegetation, cultivated fields, and relief. Map also shows the size and position of the French fleet off Molinière's Point, the site of the French landing, and the route taken by French troops to various strategic sites (plantations) near and behind the town of St. George's. Map is closely related to a group of views depicting British and French ships preparing for the battle in the Geography and Map Division's Ozanne Collection described individually in this catalog. Map complements the "Vue du fort Et Ville de S[ain]t George dans l'isle de la Grenade..." under call number Ozanne Coll. 16 Vault. Map is part of a series of watercolors and maps by the same artist/cartographer depicting battle scenes in the eastern Caribbean between the French and British related to the U.S. Revolutionary War.

437. Carte Générale des Isles Guadeloupe et Grande Terre, ou Sont Désignées tous les Postes Supérieur et ceux Susceptible detre Fortifié,... Capt. Mallet. 1796. 1 map on 2 sheets (incomplete). Colored pen-and-ink ms., on 2 sheets, upper sheet 96 1/2 x 147 cm., lower sheet 91 1/2 x 145 cm.

This detailed, well-executed, and incomplete French military map of portions of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre Islands of Guadeloupe includes coastline, coastal features, anchorages, navigational hazards, existing fortifications and sites proposed as fortifications, roads, streams and other bodies of water, settlements and towns, individual land holdings, names of selected landholders, and pictorial representation of relief and vegetation. Map includes an extensive keyed legend to fortifications and proposed sites for fortification with notes. In 1793, British occupiers of Guadeloupe were forced to leave the islands by a superior force of pro-Revolution French under the leadership of Victor Hugues, a radical French commissioner. He freed the slaves in the name of the French Revolution and dealt with the white planters in a vindictive manner. With this turn of events, French planters on the islands probably considered asking the British to return. This map, perhaps related to that proposal, evidently served as a presentation piece to the British. It is dedicated "A son Excellance Sir Ralph Abercromby Chevalier de L'ordre du Bain, Lieutenant General et Commandant En chef les Troupes de Sa Mayesté Britanique aux Indes Occidental &c".
