Inset view: "Ataque Del Pan De Azucar".
This is a beautiful and well-rendered combination plan and view of the Battle of Yungay (Peru). This document illustrates a decisive battle whose outcome had a far-reaching impact on Andean political and social life before 1850. In 1836, Bolivian President, Andrés de Santa Cruz, exploiting political divisions in Peru created the Peru-Bolivia Confederation which was overthrown with its defeat at Yungay in January, 1839. Opponents of the Confederation varied including Peruvians and Chileans fearful of the shift in the Andean balance of power created by Santa Cruz's presence. The commanders in the battle were distinguished political leaders: Santa Cruz, president of Bolivia and Manuel Bulnes, president of Chile (1841-1851). Santa Cruz led the Ejercito de la Confederacion Perú-Boliviana and Manuel Bulnes commanded the Ejercito Unido-Restaurador. The plan shows three stages of the battle. The map shows roads, streams, vegetation, pictorial representation of relief, and positions of opposing military units classified by their political allegiances. Also includes detailed keyed legends and notes. Plan is oriented with northeast at top. The accompanying well-executed panoramic view, "Ataque Del Pan De Azucar", focuses on that specific segment of the battle. View also contains keyed information related to the larger plan. Plan was produced by the victors.

MANILA
731. The Attack Of Manilla, October 1762. [1762]. Colored pen-and-ink ms., 33 x 46 cm. Scale ca. 1:2,100. (Howe; 64). 75-692515.
This is a beautiful, well-executed British plan depicting British warships (some individually identified), the location where the British landed, and an assault on Manila from the south. The attack was a part of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), a world-wide conflict between Britain and France, which also involved Spain as an ally of France. The English sent Admiral William Draper with an expeditionary force that included some 2,000 European and Indian (Sepoy) soldiers. The Spanish offered little opposition to the landing force, and on October 2, 1762, the acting Governor-General, Archbishop Manuel Antonio Rojo, surrendered Manila. The English occupation lasted until 1764, when the Philippines reverted to Spanish control at the close of the Seven Years' War. This 1762 map includes coastline, coastal features, a stream, a munitions storehouse, British gun emplacements, Spanish fortifications, various lines indicating British line of fire, and pictorial representation of roads, houses, churches, vegetation, and cultivated fields. A related map, Plan of Manila...Taken by storm the 6th Octo[ber] 1762, is found under call number G8064 .M5 1762 .P5 Howe 63 Vault. This finely rendered campaign map of islands in the Samales Group in the Sulu Archipelago documents the February 1848 Spanish naval attack on the island of Balanguingui. In the 1840's, the Spanish government in the Philippines had entered into a series of treaties related to trade and allegiance with Muslim rulers in the southern islands. When these treaties were broken by the Muslim leaders, Spanish Governor General, Narciso Clavería, organized a naval expedition that left Manila on February 9, 1848 to attack Muslim strongholds on Balanguingui (especially those at Sipac, Sungap, and Balanguingui). As a result of that successful campaign, Spain strengthened its authority over the region. Map includes coastlines, coastal features, soundings, various categories of Spanish and Muslim vessels, and settlements; also includes detailed pictorial representation of island vegetation and a panoramic profile view: "Vista del fuerte de Sipac". Map contains a brief note on the naval situation on the day when Fort Sipac surrendered. For more information on this event and on Philippine history, see Antonio M. Molina, Historia de Filipinas (Madrid: Ediciones Cultura Hispanica del Instituto de Cooperacion Iberoamericana, 1984) 2 vols. This map is part of the G&M Division's collection from the Real Escuela de Navegación, Cadiz, Spain purchased from Maggs Brothers, London.
