This small outline map of Latin America and the United States is an inset in a letter from President Thomas Jefferson to the celebrated author, Baronne de Staël-Holstein (Anne Louise Germaine Necker). In this 1816 letter, Jefferson responds to a request from Staël-Holstein for "information of the state of things in S. America". He describes what he believes will be the future divisions of an independent Latin America, and his map graphically illustrates the letter. As he states, "even our information on the state of things in the Spanish colonies is far from being distinct or certain; so that I can give you but a general idea of it. to do this we must throw that country into masses, considering Brazil as a nucleus, around which they are thus disposed. 1. Buenos Ayres, & the country South of Brazil. 2. Chili, Tucumana, & Peru, West of Brazil, & on the Pacific ocean. 3. Caraccas, & the country North of Brazil, on the gulf of Mexico. 4. Mexico, in the Northern continent." He then briefly describes current events occuring in each of these proposed divisions.

Manuscript map of the Isthmus of Darien with richly illustrated topography
Luso-Hispanic World number 63. Geography and Map Division.

This sensitively rendered English map depicts the Isthmus of Panama, the Caribbean Coast from Cartagena to Nicaragua and the Pacific Coast from Colombia to Costa Rica. In 1698, a Scottish colony named Calidonia and a settlement of Edinburg were established on the Caribbean coast of Panama. That colony and settlement were abandoned in 1699. Immediately following, a second colony, New Calidonia with the settlement New Edinburg, was established only to be abandoned in April, 1700. This map includes coastline, coastal features, navigational hazards, streams, other bodies of water, pictorial representation of vegetation and relief, and various towns and settlements including "Edinburg" and the colony of "Calidonia". Map is oriented with south at top. Map also contains a decorative wind rose. While this detailed map does not contain information regarding its authorship or date, it appears to have in its style, symbols, and manner of presentation a close affinity with the work of the cartographer and atlas maker, Herman Moll (d. 1732). In this ca. 1700 map, the Scottish colony and settlement on the Isthmus of Darien are designated respectively "Calidonia" and "Edinburg". Moll, in his map of the Scots' Colony, produced periodically after 1700 in his atlases, refers to the colony and settlement as "New Calidonia" and "New Edinburg". According to Moll in A System of Geography.... (London, 1701), the proximity of the settlement to the Pacific Ocean would allow "a Journey over the Isthmus...to be made in three days time. This we suppose was the motive that tempted the Scots Company of Merchants to send Shipping, Plant a Colony, and build a Fort on Darien. The success of that Expedition is known to every body, so that 'tis unnecessary to say when and how the Spaniards beat them off." In other atlas plates, Moll refers to the location of gold in that region.

This is a well executed, detailed map of the Internal Provinces of New Spain (Northern Mexico and Southwest United States) prepared as a result of the 1766-1768 expedition to survey presidios and defenses of northern New Spain. This map includes administrative boundaries, pictorial representation of relief and selected European and Native American towns and settlements, fortifications (presidios), mines, missions, haciendas, Native American nations, rivers, streams, lakes, coastlines and coastal features. The four sheets are numbered separately: "Primera Parte" extends from the Gulf of California to Texas, "Segunda Parte" extends from West Texas to the Louisiana border, "Tercera Parte" extends from the Gulf of California to Nueva Galicia, and "Quarta Parte" extends from Nueva Galicia to the Gulf of Mexico. While minor variations appear in the titles of each sheet, all sheets fit together to form the comprehensive map. Except for "Tercera Parte" which indicates that it was copied by Don Luis de Serville, all of the sheets were the work of Urrutia and Lafora alone. The map extends from 248 to 286 longitude and from 22 to 37 North latitude. A prominent note along the 30 North latitude reads, "Paralelo De 30 ô Linea Defensa Proyectada". This note apparently reflects then current Spanish thinking regarding what was the heartland of Hispanic America. If the map's coverage were extended to include all of North America, the thirty degree line would run through New Orleans and just north of St. Augustine. Along the Red River a curious note reads, "Presidios de Cadachos pertenecientes àla nueba Francia". Variant copies of this manuscript exist in other collections including the U.S. National Archives, the Huntington Library, the British Library, and in the War Ministry (Madrid).

This presentation piece, dedicated to the Viceroy of New Spain, Agustín de Ahumada y Villalón (1755-58), consists of a map of New Spain and North America, a distance chart between principal cities of New Spain, and an idealized view of the area between Mexico City and Veracruz with the historical symbol of Mexico (eagle and serpent in a cactus) firmly centered in its midst. Main purpose of this piece was to acquaint the new Viceroy with the extent of his empire and its relationship with the rest of North America. In addition to providing distances between key cities in New Spain, the distance chart also gives latitude, longitude, and zodiac sign for each site. Map is more of a symbolic statement rather than a factual presentation of the geography of North America.

Manuscript map of northern South America with illustrated relief and hydrographic detail
Luso-Hispanic World number 107. Geography and Map Division.

The Treaty of San Ildefonso of October, 1777 between the Iberian crowns stipulated the need to more accurately delimit the boundaries of their possessions in South America. To ensure that doubt would be removed regarding uncertain portions of the boundary, a joint commission of experts was named to survey and mark the line. The demarcation surveys continued over a period of seventeen years. The five thousand mile line that was mutually recognized remained an acceptable common boundary for more than a century. This Spanish map is a key to the 1780-1792 joint Spanish-Portuguese boundary commission's work based on the survey directed by the Spaniard, Francisco Requena, in the northwestern quadrant of South America. It is also the composite map for the area covered by his survey commission. Capital red letters denote specific survey explorations along the Spanish-Portuguese border in the Amazon River Basin. Map also includes extensive networks of rivers and streams, Native American settlements, European towns and cities, missions, abandoned settlements, ecclesiastical jurisdictions, administrative centers by categories, sites of longitude and latitude readings, pictorial representation of relief, coastline, and coastal features. Map also includes keyed legend and an elaborate cartouche which features an Amazon landscape (flora, fauna, people and objects of the region). In a 1796 letter to the King of Spain that accompanied this and other maps, Requena wrote, "I now have the honor to present to Your Excellency a collection of maps of the rivers which were examined and surveyed by the combined Spanish and Portuguese parties. They are on a scale sufficiently large to be quite detailed, for they show the islands, channels, branches, and other details of these rivers, to permit Your Majesty to appreciate the injustice and ambitious pretensions of the Portuguese commissioners."

This detailed and highly informative Spanish map of the Río Paraná-Río Uruguay region is one of several listed in this guide related to the mid-eighteenth century boundary disputes between Spain and Portugal in South America. Two treaties (of 1750 and of 1777) established joint survey commissions to carefully delineate, based on field research, portions of the disputed boundary areas. One of those commissions was involved with studying the location of the boundary in the region of Ríos Uruguay and Paraná. In order to correct previous boundary determinations, commissions were established after the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1777). This Spanish plan was prepared "á desatar las dudas sucitadas entre sus respectivos comisarios" (to remove doubts that had arisen between respective commissioners). The plan reflects the intensive use of the latest surveys in combination with information gathered from previous joint surveys to reach accord regarding the international boundary. This map is centered on the vicinity of the celebrated Iguazú Falls and on the extensive, former missions of the Jesuit Order. Map includes rivers and streams, waterfalls, roads, European and Native American settlements and missions, pictorial representation of mountain ranges and selected heights, several boundary markers, numerous internal notes related to boundary issues, and references to those areas actually surveyed and to those derived from previous border surveys. This map is one of a series prepared by the Joint Spanish Portuguese Commission for the Survey of the Lands along the Paraguay and Uruguay Rivers following the Treaty of San Ildefonso of October 1, 1777. Survey was made between 1784 and 1788.
