Annotations are provided for all entries and are organized according to topic, often very specific in nature (Byzantine floor mosaics). Be aware however, that this bibliography is 30 years old.

In 1974, the reference librarians at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill compiled a list of all of their and Duke University’s medieval and renaissance material in this bibliography. Since both universities are research institutions with centers for the study of the middle ages and renaissance, this bibliography is extremely long and extensive. It is an excellent source to find research pre 1974. The downside to this resource is that it is over 40 years old and therefore leaves out many recent developments in the field.

Within the 30 volume series Great Lives from History published by Salem Press are contained two volumes on the middle ages. These volumes feature 356 entries ranging from 3-6 pages in length. Each entry is sectioned into different parts: early life, life’s works, significance, and further reading. In keeping in line with current trends in scholarship, entries include figures from the entire Eurasian landmass, rather than just western Europe. This resource serves as an excellent reference guide for anyone looking for quick-to-find medieval bibliographies.

While not as geographically expansive or thorough in description as the The Middle Ages volumes from the Great Lives from History series, this book does provide entries of basic information for European and Islamic historical figures. However, bibliographies are sparse and oftentimes contain only one source. This still is a good source for obtaining fast bibliographical facts.

This detailed study on European symbolic vocabulary, and quasi-dramatic form of one late medieval courtly festival -- the royal entry -- is the first full length study of the ceremonial arrival of royalty to a city and the celebrations which took place on behalf of these sovereigns. It’s timeframe ranges from 1370-1550.

Works on the customs and rituals of the middle ages can be found throughout the general stacks. Joelle Rollo-Koster’s compendium of essays provides information on various customs ranging from rituals in medieval business to performing arts of fifteenth century Japanese outcasts.

This text provides minimal information on the different sports and games played during the middle ages. The material presented here is suitable only for the most novice of researchers. It is very rudimentary and should only be used as a starting point. However, what is unique about this book is that covers sports and leisure activities from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America and Oceania.

Aimed at those with basic/intermediate knowledge of the medieval period, this atlas offers some good political maps of different areas of the medieval world. Beginning with the late Roman Empire, the temporal range of the atlases range from 418 to the end of the fifteenth century with the spread of printing in Europe. While most of the atlases depict different empires and kingdoms in Europe and the Arab world, this work expands the scope of the middle ages from Europe and the Muslim areas to East Asia and Africa. This work functions as a good starting point for those interested in learning about other areas of the world not historically included in medieval period.

This three-volume encyclopedia offers a fairly extensive overview of the crusading period which spans the late eleventh century up to the late fifteenth century. Entries include historical figures, families/dynasties, literary works, places, and subjects relating to the crusades. While this encyclopedia covers approximately 300 years, the bulk of the entries relate to the period of the Latin crusades and the occupation of the Levant between 1095 and 1291. All entries contain a bibliography.

This reference work is monumental in scope. It comprises 13 volumes, a supplement and an index. Entries include people, events, geographic place names, and abstract ideas such as philosophical theorems, currency, etc. The index volume provides an alphabetical list of all articles in these 13 volumes and a list of all the contributors as well. This multivolume set is an excellent starting point for the newcomer to the medieval studies discipline. Most of the entries are relatively short and provide quick access to most topics relating to the medieval period. It is worth noting that researchers should also consult the supplement volume due to the updates it contains. To compose, compile and publish this work took nearly 25 years. In that time, scholarship had changed in the medieval studies field and subjects which were not of interest to scholars at the inception of this project became popular. The supplement provides entries on these topics that entered the scholarly realm as the project neared its termination.

Although the Middle Ages saw brilliant achievements in the diverse nations of East Central Europe, this period has been almost totally neglected in Western historical scholarship. This loss of independence means that their history prior to foreign conquest has acquired exceptional importance in today’s national consciousness, and the medieval period remains a major point of reference and a source of national pride and ethnic identity. This book is a substantial and timely contribution to our knowledge of the history of East Central Europe.

This two volume set is a comprehensive list of most chronicles and their authors from the medieval period. Lemmata (entries) include authors’ names and the title of specific chronicles. It is the best reference source for researchers looking to identify chronicles and their authors. It spans approximately 1200 years (from 300-1500) and is not limited to Christian Europe but includes Islamic and Jewish chronicles and chroniclers from the same period. Each entry is complete with a bibliography. A very useful feature at the end of volume two is a list of all the manuscripts where these chronicles can be found which is arranged according to library or institution holding them.

Completed around the same time as the Dictionary of the Middle Ages, this ten volume enterprise can be seen as the German equivalent to the aforesaid work. Entries are extensive and contain important highly detailed bibliographic citations. This work is greatly regarded by medievalists.

For those studying Anglo-Saxon culture, this is an indispensable encyclopedia. Lemmata comprise a comprehensive overview of Anglo-Saxon England. A useful feature of this monograph is that it does not confine itself to strict period dates, as many other works on a specific era do. Rather, it includes entries which do not chronologically occur in the Anglo-Saxon period in medieval England (ca. 500-1100) but are still related to it. For example, Laurence Nowell, a sixteenth century scholar who played a major role in the revival of Anglo-Saxon studies is added as an entry. Appendices include lists of English rulers and bishops during this time.

Provides a very useful background for contextualizing the historical and cultural environment in which old and middle English existed. The many remaining chapters in this book contain Latin from all areas of medieval society. Examples ship building, medicine, commerce, everyday life, agriculture, astronomy, astrology, and many other topics. As in the beginning chapters on syntax and grammar, these chapters each contain a bibliography of sources for further research.

This book is an excellent resource for those who are interested in becoming acquainted with the Latin literature of the middle ages. It contains excerpts of famous and minor authors from both the continent and England. Temporally, this book covers most of the medieval period, beginning with writers from late antiquity, ca 350 until 1350. Perhaps the most striking feature of this work is its fairly extensive introduction to medieval Latin grammar and vocabulary. Since much of the Latin writing in the medieval period mirrored vernacular syntax, and the meanings of words changed from their original classical definitions to suit new medieval contexts, this introduction is a welcome addition to this anthology.

This dictionary is a very ambitious work which includes 20 volumes. It is the largest and most extensive catalog of middle English and contains over 15,000 pages. The breadth of this work makes it an extremely valuable resource for scholars of middle English literature and linguistics. In the first volume, there is a guide to consonantal and vowel sounds, dialectical variations with maps, and a list of manuscripts consulted for the basis of this dictionary. Each entry contains the modern English equivalent, all the instances where the word appears in all the middle English, etymological information, and its grammatical function. Given that there was no attempt to standardize spelling until the 18th century, alternative spelling variations of words are also included with each entry. This is a handbook for learning how to read old English. It is designed for the beginner who has no knowledge of old English, or for the novice who is need of sharpening his skills. Topics include old English pronunciation, syntax and grammar. The book is divided into chapters, and each chapter contains exercises for the reader to practice and apply the newly acquired material of the current chapter. Since this book’s audience is for beginning or intermediate readers of old English, it does not contain very extensive vocabulary. Pilgrimage, a ubiquitous institution in the middle ages, is covered comprehensively in this encyclopedia. Entries were included according to theme. These themes include architecture, church architecture, cult and devotion, cult objects, early pilgrimage, economy, experiences, Islamic pilgrimage, Jewish pilgrimage, literature, miracles, reliquaries, sites, society, and theology.

This text takes a different approach to the traditional scholarly practices regarding medieval medicine. Most of the work in the field focuses on medieval medical practices and the textual tradition of medical knowledge from antiquity, the medieval Arab world, up to the late middle ages. This book seeks to elucidate the medical teaching practices of the medieval period, specifically at the University of Paris. Topics it discusses include teaching methods, relationship between student and professor, and a detailed explanation of the origin and development of the ars medicine, a collection of six texts which were compiled in the 12th century and trace beginnings back to the early Byzantine Empire. However, this monograph is more concerned with medieval education than medicine itself and does not comment on medical practices at the time, but on medical educational practices instead.

There has been quite a bit of scholarly attention on medieval English medicine. Two significant events which changed the course of medical practice in late medieval England was the outbreak of bubonic and pneumonic plague in 1348 and the establishment of the Royal College of Physicians. These two events form the approximate terminus post quem and terminus ante quem of a new era in medieval English medicine.

This two volume work contains a wealth of information on the relation between medieval diet and health as related to the four humors. It also includes discussions on selected medical writings from the period. The work’s overall premise is that diet, health, and medical literature comprised a large genre of medieval writing. The first edition illuminates the breadth and significance of this genre, while the second volume provides extensive lists of manuscripts and incunabula used in this text along with a vast bibliography.

This two volume edition is a good representative of a typical medieval medical manuscript. The content of the manuscript is characteristic of medieval medical texts. It is a compilation of works from various classical, Arabic and medieval doctors. However, what makes it atypical is that it is a middle English translation of those works. This then, is one of the rare medical texts written in a vernacular. The contributors to this two volume edition explain the middle English translations in light of the original Latin and discuss in detail the life of the scribe. This work will be of interest not only to those studying medieval medicine, but also to those researching historical linguistics/philology as well.

Walter Ullmann's contribution to the study of medieval political and legal thought needs no emphasis. In the present volume are collected a number of the early articles which it was not possible to include in his previous collections, together with others published since those volumes appeared. The articles display a striking consistency of approach, though in the more than forty years separating the earliest from the latest there is an obvious development in his thought. Ullman held the view that the law must be studied in its own historical context, as a function of society and a product of the factors which shaped social life; equally, he stressed the central position of the law in the study of medieval history, for its precise character meant that it could provide a more reliable probe into medieval beliefs and doctrine than any other form of evidence.

The essays broach two fundamental questions: how were social distinctions and divisions perceived and portrayed by the politically active, the writers, and the image-makers; and, bound up with the first question, according to what principles and methods should the modern enquirer perceive and portray the ordering of society during Western Europe's formative years? The contributors bring perspectives from a range of disciplines, from historical, sociological, and literary to the art-historical and theoretical. Similarly, the contents are not limited to Northwestern Europe, but also address the Muslim Middle East, Dante's Italy, Renaissance Venice, and Adriatic Ragusa (Dubrovnik). 'Pioneers' seems fitting to Professor Gouron to describe the jurists (civilists) of the 12th-century Latin West, that were the bearers of a new science, born in Bologna about 1100. Away from Bologna these pioneers were isolated, scattered from Scotland to Styria or Catalonia, and no more than one hundred can now be identified. These people, and their manuscripts and the relationships between them, are the subject of this collection, the fifth in the Variorum series by Andr¿ouron, himself to be regarded as a pioneer in this field of research. This volume brings together twenty-two studies which have appeared since 1997 in widely scattered publications, often hard to access, along with additional notes and indexes.
