Moldova: Address and Telephone Directories

Telephone and address directories are used by genealogists and historians to identify people and businesses from a particular place and era. This guide lists directories from the Republic of Moldova in the Library of Congress collection.

Introduction

Covers of telephone books from Moldova. Library of Congress General Collections.

The Library of Congress maintains a large collection of foreign and domestic directories. Most of the foreign telephone directories held by the Library of Congress do not have catalog records, so we put together this list of directories from Moldova as a finding aid for our staff and researchers. This finding aid covers directories from Moldova between the years 1923-2013. In addition to the uncataloged telephone directories listed in this guide, the Library also has directories that can be found in the Library of Congress Online Catalog using subject keywords such as "Moldova" and "directories." In this guide we list most of the cataloged directories for businesses, non-governmental organizations, political and business elite, and more, with links to their catalog records in the section entitled Other Directories. These directories can be requested in the online catalog using a Reader Identification Card for use in any reading room located in the Jefferson or Adams buildings of the Library.

When looking for listings of smaller towns in Moldova, keep in mind that many telephone directories are not only for a city, but for a raion as well, so they include listings for other towns in the district. Therefore, a researcher should consult a map to locate a larger city nearest to the desired town, and then use the directories for that city. When researchers visit the European Reading Room they may also consult the 1996 book on the administrative territorial organization of Moldova and the current spellings of the names of towns in the country Nomenclatorul.
