Volume 2, book 3, of the comprehensive and authoritative History of Cartography includes a chapter on the traditional cartography in the Americas authored by series editor, G. Malcolm Lewis. His entry, titled "Maps, Mapmaking, and Map Use by Native North Americans," pages 51-182, addresses in detail critical facets of these subjects, including Amerindian categories and words for indigenous cartography; the role of cosmography in Indian spatial thought; the importance of terrestrial maps in rock art; cosmographical and celestial rock art; and the nature of regional and linguistic differences on American Indian maps, as well as their influences on maps compiled by Europeans.

This book contains a series of lectures on North American and Mesoamerican Indian maps given at the Newberry Library, Chicago, in 1993, and later published with several other essays. Edited by British geographer, G. Malcolm Lewis, it provides researchers with a detailed scholarly overview of the history of Native American maps, map making, and geographic knowledge. Among the subjects covered are encounters both on the frontier and in academic research institutions; the impact of Indian transportation knowledge on European maps; Native mapping in southern New England, Arkansas, and the colonial southeast; and material representations of Native space via considerations of power, cosmology, and conduct of life.

Cited as the "first book in English on Native American maps," this 1997 monograph develops a narrative around each selection, reconstructing the history and environment in which it was created by American Indians.

This is the third edition of Cumming's major study of the mapping of the Southeast before the American Revolution. Revised and enlarged by geographer, Louis De Vorsey, Jr., it includes De Vorsey's extended essay on the contributions of Amerindians to the mapping of the Southeast from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, and contains an informative conclusion comparing Native American and European map diagnostics. The guide itself describes 450 maps, with several based upon Indian sources and others with Indian geographic features. It is complemented by ninety-five color and black-and-white reproductions.

Paulett's book uses the deerskin trade of the colonial Southeast to examine the ways in which Natives and Europeans perceived spatial and human relationships. These competing interactions gave rise to a “pidgin sort of cartography,” referred to by the author as "narrative" mapping, which derived from letters, reports, and sketch maps made by traders and their Indian informants. He then focuses on geographic features that were unique to this process: the Savannah River; the town of Augusta, Georgia; the system of pathways connecting European and Native settlements; and British homes and trading posts in Indian towns.

This three-volume work brings together over forty writings and studies that reveal how maps are used in research on Native America from contact times to the present. Volume one deals with the role of governments in mapping Native American lands, resources, tribes, and activities. Volume two concerns academic contributions to the study of Native Americans and Native American geography. The final volume includes indigenous contributions to the cartography of Native America, especially in their efforts to sustain their identity and legacy, as well as manage resources.
