This German-language art catalog includes a chapter that identifies, lists, and describes forty-three European maps and globes created in the sixteenth century with imagery of Native Americans. It also contains a bibliography of Native American imagery appearing in sixteenth century book illustrations and miscellany, in addition to introductory chapters on the nature of artists' representations of Amerindians in period texts.

Contains 100 illustrated entries reproducing engraved title pages and decorative frontispieces from atlases, geographies, pilots, travel narratives, and other sources published from around 1470 to 1870. Many of the plates include artists' imagery of Native Americans, mostly either as allegorical female representations of the continents, as idealized savages, or as cannibals.

In the era of colonial expansion, monstrous peoples were regularly illustrated on Renaissance maps. The author includes a chapter on how mapmakers both expanded upon this convention and drew from other genres to create allegorical personifications and ethnic stereotypes of peoples inhabiting the Americas, particularly the Algonquians on the east coast of North America. Among her examples are Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, De Bry's America, De Jode's 1593 map of North America, and Hole's 1612 map of Virginia for John Smith.
