American Folklife Center State Resources

American Folklife Center Collections: Nevada
The collections of the American Folklife Center contain rich and varied materials from Nevada that document the state's diverse folk traditions. Among its unique recordings are Ute, Northern Paiute, Washoe, and other Native American music recordings made by Omer Stewart in 1938 and Willard Rhodes in 1949; cowboy songs and stories by Jack H. "Powder River" Lee of Virginia City, 1942; oral histories and stories of traditional life made by Duncan Emrich, 1950; and Basque radio broadcasts from Station KELK in Elko, from the 1970s.

Exhibitions Featuring Nevada

The African American Odyssey: A Quest for Full Citizenship
This exhibition showcases the incomparable African-American collections of the Library of Congress. It displays more than 240 items, including books, government documents, manuscripts, maps, musical scores, plays, films, and recordings. The Reconstruction and it's Aftermath section includes a brief paragraph on "African American Population Distribution, 1890" which mentions migrations patterns in Nevada.
Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine: Two Kids from Brooklyn: Kaye Onstage at Harrah's
This exhibition explores the many talents of the powerful entertainment duo Danny Kaye (1911–1987) and Sylvia Fine (1913–1991), both raised in Brooklyn, New York. Kaye’s career as an entertainer spanned six decades and encompassed nearly every aspect of the performing arts. The exhibition includes a brief paragraph and photograph on Kaye Onstage at Harrah's which is located in Tahoe, Nevada.
Down to Earth: Herblock and Photographers Observe the Environment: Gravel Pit Turned Marina, Nevada

Rivers, Edens, Empires: Lewis & Clark and the Revealing of America: After Lewis & Clark
On April 7, 1805, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark left Fort Mandan for points west, beginning the process of "filling in the canvas" of America. This exhibition features the Library's rich collections of exploration material documenting the quest to connect the East and the West by means of a waterway passage. Nevada is mentioned in the section "After Lewis and Clark."

American Treasures of the Library of Congress

The American Treasures of the Library of Congress exhibition is an exhibition of the rarest, most interesting or significant items relating to America's past, drawn from every corner of the world's largest library.

Thirty-Six Star Flag
One can imagine that this American flag printed as a color woodcut on linen, celebrates the spirit of reunification in the heady days after the Civil War. It was created between the time in which Nevada became the thirty-sixth state on October 31, 1864, and the addition of Nebraska to the United States on March 1, 1867.

Students create their town’s history for coming generations and place themselves on the map in a literal as well as figurative sense, by producing portions of an updated version of an early twentieth century panoramic map from the Digital Collections.

The following dates in history feature significant events in Nevada's history as highlighted in the Library of Congress' collections.

October 7
October 7, 1979, was the final day of the fall roundup and trail drive for the Ninety-Six Ranch. The ranch lies along Martin Creek, a tributary of the Little Humboldt River in the upper section of Paradise Valley, Humboldt County, Nevada.
October 14
Sarah Winnemucca, whose Paiute Indian name was Thocmetony (Shell Flower), died at her sister's home in Henry's Lake, Nevada, on October 14, 1891. Winnemucca was the first Native American woman known to secure a copyright and to publish in the English language. Her book, Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims, is an autobiographical account of her people’s experiences during their first forty years of contact with white explorers and settlers.
November 30
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, popularly known as Mark Twain, was born November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, and spent his childhood in nearby Hannibal. Clemens wrote for the Virginia City, Nevada, newspaper Territorial Enterprise in 1862, adopting the pseudonym Mark Twain.
