In Dalarna, the use of the names of farms from which an ancestor once came (gårdsnamn) has entered written records and often become part of an official name consisting of farm name + first name + patronymic. This study involves primarily names occurring in the parish of Nås, covers the period 1680-1900, and few individuals can be identified, but a perusal of the book gives researchers in Dalarna records a better understanding of the names they may encounter.

A product of Göteborg University’s Swedish name project, this book “is based on the complete names of the total population of Swedish citizens as recorded in the national registration files on January 1, 1973” [p. 17]. The names number 10,562, not taking into account names that are held by fewer than ten persons. They are first names only.

A dissertation from the University of Helsinki that “deals with the emergence and evolution of surnames from 1780 to 1930 in the rural Swedish speaking part of the province of Ostrobothnia in Finland . . . .” [p. 6]. Chapter five, “ Tillnamnens innehåll och ursprung” [content and origin of surnames], pp. 134-211, lists many individuals and gives short biographies with family affiliations. A study of as many people named Ingmar as the author could find. Many individuals are listed and brief biographical, and sometimes genealogical, information accompanies them. There appears to be no order, and the only criterion for inclusion is that they share the author’s first name. No index.

The use of nicknames in records is a phenomenon in West Gotland that apparently is found to a far lesser degree elsewhere in Sweden, and can, therefore, serve as an indication that the person who bears the name may be from West Gotland. This book studies the subject in detail, with much statistical information, and provides a very interesting insight into the practice.

A doctoral dissertation on names in Umeå and its surroundings from 1622 to 1820. Four hundred and forty-one pages of surnames, listing every person who bore each name, with information on family and profession. A section of variant spellings of some of the names.

Basically a what-shall-we-name-the-baby book, this gives considerable information on each name: the date of the name day, the meaning and origin of each, its numerical place in the list of most popular names, and a unique set of arrows that indicate whether each name is increasing or decreasing in popularity now, and whether it has done so over a long period of time.

Baptismal names. The first one hundred pages present statistical tables of names and their occurrence geographically and chronologically. By perusing the tables, the researcher may be able to determine that a particular name was popular in only one geographical area in the sixteenth century.
