Introduction

North Dakota became the 39th state on November 2, 1889. North Dakota and South Dakota were both a part of the Dakota Territory in 1861 before they obtained statehood in 1889. North Dakota's name derives from the Sioux tribe who occupied the Dakota division before the arrival of the Europeans. The capital of North Dakota is Bismarck.
