Old Church Slavic and Church Slavic: Primary and Secondary Resources at the Library of Congress

Print Materials

Kniga glagolemaja Apokalepsis. 1712-1713. Library of Congress Rare Book & Special Collections Division.

The Library of Congress has an impressive number of materials written in the multiple recensions of Church Slavic. These materials include translations of the Bible and other liturgical, ecclesiastical and theological works, such as church calendars, missals, exegeses and handbooks for church clergy. The Library of Congress also has a small number of secular works printed in Church Slavic, such as a first edition of Arifmetika from 1703, which is considered the first mathematics textbook printed in Russia. One unique aspect of the Church Slavic collection at the Library of Congress is the significant number of books published by the Old Believer (raskol'niki or staroobriadtsy) community in Russia. The Old Believers are a group of Eastern Orthodox Christians who rejected the 17th-century reforms of Patriarch Nikon which attempted to align church practices closer to that of the Greek Orthodox church.

The collection of Church Slavic materials at the Library of Congress primarily consists of printed books rather than manuscripts. The table below highlights Church Slavic materials at the Library of Congress. The materials were published in a variety of regions, including present-day Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia and Russia. There are also a few Church Slavic items in the collection printed in Western Europe, namely Italy, representing the diversity of publishing in Church Slavic. Notable items from the collection include the following:

In addition to the materials described in the table below, the Library of Congress holds several print facsimiles of Church Slavic manuscripts. These can be found in the Library of Congress Online Catalog using the following subject heading:
