Creative Commons Licenses and Definitions

Some copyright holders, typically the creators of a work, use Creative Commons (CC) licenses to describe the rights status of images. When creators have elected to use a Creative Commons license, the type of license applies to the works they have identified within the Library's collection. For other images made by these creators, rights should be discussed with the artist. Also keep in mind that photographs of works of art may be restricted by the copyright of the creator of the artwork in the picture. Privacy and publicity rights may also apply.

CC BY

This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. Credit must be given to the creator.

CC BY-NC

This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. Credit must be given to the creator. Only noncommercial uses of the work are permitted.

CC BY-NC-ND

This license allows reusers to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator.

CC BY-NC-SA

This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms. Credit must be given to the creator. Only noncommercial uses of the work are permitted. Adaptations must be shared under the same terms.

CC BY-ND
