HLAS annotation: This splendid, deluxe, monumental work was published as a companion to the exhibition under the same title held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts between 2 February and 16 June 2013 and at the Seattle Art Museum between 17 October 2013 and 5 January 2014. The exceptional exhibition brought together works from close to 50 public and private collections representing an extensive selection of precolumbian treasures and masterpieces from the Spanish colonial period to modern times, including over 100 pieces that had never before been seen outside Peru. Almost every aspect of Peru's rich cultural and artistic heritage is revealed in the contributions by some 25 scholars from the disciplines of art and architecture history, anthropology, archeology, and others. Of special interest for the study of art and architecture history are the excellent chapters, "An Overview of the Art and Archaeology of the Pre-Columbian Civilizations of Peru," by Erell Hubert (p. 44-59); "Rulers, Gods and Myths in Ancient Peru," by Krzysztof Makowski (p. 60-73); "Mochica Rituals of Battle and Human Sacrifice," by Luis Jaime Castillo Butters (p. 74-83); "The Royal Tombs of Sipán," by Walter Alva (p. 84-95); "The Face behind the Mask," by Carlos G. Elera (p. 96-107); "The Naymlap Legend: Between Mystery and Fact," by Carlos Wester La Torre (p. 108-115); "Ancestor Worship in Ancient Peru," by Santiago Uceda Castillo (p. 117-121); "The Sweat of the Sun and the Tears of the Moon: Gold and Silver in Ancient Peru," by Carole Fraresso (p. 142-150); "Ethnicity, Religiosity, and Iconographic Innovation in Painting under the Viceroyalty," by Luis Eduardo Wuffarden (p. 158-184); "Inca Heritage in Peruvian Colonial Art," by Thomas B.F. Cummins (p. 188-193); "The Silversmith's Art from the Viceroyalty to the Republic," by Luis Eduardo Wuffarden (p. 206-216); and "Architecture under the Viceroyalty and the Republic," by José García Bryce (p. 218-222). All of these chapters are illustrated with spectacular full color plates, often covering the entire page. The book concludes with insightful interviews of Peruvian distinguished personalities; archeologist Ruth Shady Solís, architect Víctor Pimentel Gurmendi, anthropologist José Matos Mar, and writer Mario Vargas Llosa. Annexes include chronology, biographies of the artists, a list of exhibited works, maps, and a comprehensive bibliography. [HLAS Contributor: Humberto Rodriguez-Camilloni]
