Mona Van Duyn, U.S. Poet Laureate: A Resource Guide

American poet Mona Van Duyn served as U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry from 1992-1993 at the Library of Congress. This guide provides access to selected print and online resources related to Van Duyn’s life and work.

U.S. Poet Laureate Mona Van Duyn 1992-1993.

On June 15, 1992, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington appointed Mona Van Duyn to be the 11th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.

Dr. Billington said upon her appointment:

I look forward to welcoming Ms. Van Duyn to the Library and I am particularly pleased to have a distinguished poet of such a wide range joining us to promote public awareness of poetry and literature.

Van Duyn took up her duties in fall 1992, opening the Library’s annual literary season on October 7th. with a reading of her work in the Montpelier Room. The first female poet laureate, Van Duyn served one term as poet laureate, finishing her duties in May 1993.
