Preserving Newspapers

Handling Newspapers

Taking care when handling any collection item, especially large format, poor-quality paper items like newspapers, is one of the more effective, cost-efficient, and easily achieved preservation measures. The following guidelines can be used while preparing to handle fragile collections.

Preparing A Space for Retrieval

Newspapers are inherently fragile due to the paper quality and size. It is best to prepare a space for reading, processing, or research prior to retrieving the newspapers.

Tips for preparing your space:

  • Wash hands before handling the newspaper.
  • Prepare a clean, large worktable on which to use the newspaper. The table should be larger than the fully opened newspaper.
  • Keep the newspaper flat and fully supported on the table during use.
  • Workspace should be clear of food and drinks.

Handling Newspapers

Basic tips for carefully handling fragile newsprint include:

  • Never attempt to straighten out folds by folding the paper in the opposite direction.
  • If the newspaper is folded, refold the paper using the original center fold and with the edges neatly aligned.
  • Don't use paper clips, rubber bands, tape of any kind, staples, and/or glue on newspapers and clippings.
  • If a page needs to be bookmarked, cut a piece of acid-free lignin-free paper. Do not use acidic inserts or sticky notes.
  • Don't fold corners of the newspaper down as this can cause the paper to tear or crumble.
  • When turning pages, support the page with a flat hand rather than pulling and lifting at the corners.

When handling newspapers be sure to always use both hands. Gently slide one hand under the page to be turned and lift.

Continue to support the turning page with both hands as it is lifted.

Continues to support the page with both hands as the page is set down.

Make sure that there are no creases or puckers forming as the page is turned and set down.
