Québec Studies is the bilingual, interdisciplinary journal published by the American Council for Québec Studies in collaboration with Liverpool University Press. The journal publishes articles, review essays, and book reviews on all aspects of Québec and North American Francophone history, society, culture, and language. Articles cover colonial and political history, party politics, healthcare policy, literature and film, language and language policy, minority Francophone societies, cultural pluralism, urban development, gender issues, indigenous writing and cinema, etc. Special dossiers have focused on Franco-Ontario, Franco-America, Translation, Anglo-Québec Writing, The October Crisis, Queer Québec, Literature in the New Millennium, Research by Young Scholars, etc. Québec Studies is a refereed scholarly journal published twice yearly and distributed to members of ACQS and libraries in the United States, Canada, and Europe. This project aims to encourage the acquisition, preservation (physical and digital) and enhancement of editorial archives, as well as the analysis of archival documents of publishers in the Northern Francophone regions. The partnership brings together universities (U. of Sherbrooke, U. of Ottawa, U. of Liège, U. of Lausanne), some of which are home to research centers and research chairs, the Institut Mémoires de l'Édition Contemporaine and National Association of Book Publishers. Focusing on the period from the end of the Second World War to today, the project raises essential questions from the archives: Where are the editorial archives? How are these archives organized? How to promote the acquisition, conservation and enhancement of editorial archives? What do they tell us in terms of the relationship between a publisher's words and actions, in terms of power struggles (of social groups, gender, ethnicity), in terms of reactions to internal crises (for example the appearance of the electronic book) or external (such as the Second World War)? What networks do the archives of Belgium, Switzerland, France, Franco-Ontario and Quebec publishers bring up? To answer these questions, the partnership program has set itself five objectives: Lay the foundations for common reflection on editorial archives: their nature, their development, their use and treatment, their contribution; Enrich the understanding of the functions of the editor through the analysis; Study the circulation of the publisher's discourse on a transnational scale; Consolidate and broaden the foundations of a partnership between university researchers and editorial archive depository organizations in Canada and French-speaking Europe; Develop a common digital platform for promoting editorial archives at the Francophone level.

At once national library, national archives and public library of a major metropolitan city, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) brings together, preserves and promotes heritage materials from or related to Québec. It holds digitized Muncipal Directories, Court Records, postcards, personal manuscript collections, and a large number of newspaper and periodical collections. As a key player of the knowledge society and a genuine cultural hub, BAnQ strives to democratize access to knowledge. It carries out its activities in 12 facilities which are open to the public across Québec. Some important parts of the BAnQ digital collections include a portal to 180 newspaper titles, the Lovell directories of Montreal and its suburbs from 1842-2010, and over 50,000 scanned images.

This version of The Canadian Encyclopedia, released in enhanced digital interactive form in October 2013, represents the latest incarnation of a project with a unique history. Since the first edition arrived in 1985, Canadians have held a claim few others can make: we have our own national encyclopedia. The idea of covering all branches of knowledge or aspects of a subject in one body of work dates back to 1728 in England. However, a bilingual national edition produced by, for and about the people of a single country, charting its events, culture, history and landscape, remains rare.
The Canadian Encyclopedia plays an essential role in providing Canadians and others with accurate, updated information about our people and country. In 2003, the Encyclopedia incorporated the content of the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, which included some 3,000 articles and 500 illustrations.

Together, the Biodôme, Biosphère, Insectarium, Jardin botanique and Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan form a place where nature and science are honoured, a Space for Life. It's a participatory movement in which communities here and elsewhere are invited to participate. And it's also a commitment to protect our planet's biodiversity.

FJAQ is a platform for the integration of young Afro-descendants in the province of Quebec. Through the promotion of their contribution to Quebec society, accompaniment, support, dissemination of information, mentoring, all while promoting solidarity and intercultural dialogue.

The Franco-American Women's Institute is an organization of women who gather together as a force for the specific purpose of promoting Franco-American, ethnic women's voices. The Franco-American Women's Institute is also an archival place or a recording place. The women come together in many forms of presentation, body, soul and creative spirit, as Franco-American women--Québécois, Acadian, Métis, Mixed Blood, French Canadian, 'Cajun, Creole and Huguenot--in a way which encourages them to be voiced while collecting a record of their and their maman's existence. Daughters, mamans, and mémères. Franco-Americans are the ancestors of an important and large genealogical group located on the North American continent. These women live in pockets of communities throughout the Northeast and elsewhere. Here in Maine several communities have been chez-nous for Franco-Americans for more than the past 150 years.

The Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes was the first Canadian Studies journal in the country. The journal has a long history of being deeply committed to interdisciplinary perspectives, bilingual presentation of research, and the scholarly study of Canada. The mandate of the JCS/REC is twofold: it aims to publish the best scholarship about Canadian history, culture and society, whether the researcher is junior or senior, living in Canada or abroad; and second, to serve as a vehicle for disseminating solid, original research about Canada. JCS continues to champion and advance the emergence and legitimacy of interdisciplinary research in Canada.

During the 16th century, following the discovery of the rich fishing banks off Newfoundland, France became the first European nation active in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1604, France created a permanent settlement there, laying the foundations of a country that would develop its own culture—a blend of French roots, Aboriginal customs, and adaptations to the new land. After 1763, under English rule, Canadians continued to maintain their customs, ensuring a French presence in North America. In 2004, to mark the 400th anniversary of the French presence in North America, France and Canada re-created their singular adventure and sparked new interest in their shared history by putting documents online reproduced in their entirety using the latest digitization technologies, and making them accessible to a broad public. With enthusiasm and determination that reflect the scope of the project, the Direction des Archives de France, Library and Archives Canada (LAC), Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec and the Canadian Embassy in Paris set up work teams, whose members ensured a constant and effective liaison between the two continents. This site provides access to a virtual exhibition and a database containing more than one million images.

The MJE promotes an international, multidisciplinary discussion of issues in the field of educational research, theory, and practice. The MJE publishes three issues a year. Québec was founded by the French explorer Champlain in the early 17th century. It is the only North American city to have preserved its ramparts, together with the numerous bastions, gates and defensive works which still surround Old Québec. The Upper Town, built on the cliff, has remained the religious and administrative centre, with its churches, convents and other monuments like the Dauphine Redoubt, the Citadel and Château Frontenac. Together with the Lower Town and its ancient districts, it forms an urban ensemble which is one of the best examples of a fortified colonial city.

French settlers of the 17th century brought to the St. Lawrence valley not only skilled craftsmen who transplanted the handicrafts of France to the New World but a plan of life in which painted, sculpture and other arts were an essential part. We are still affected by the notion of art as a luxury which grew up in the 19th century when the traditional handicraft skills had been destroyed by the rise of machine manufacturing and people came to look on the arts as something that you went away and bought somewhere when you had grown rich like perfumes or lingerie or any other luxury. But you cannot buy a culture; you can only create one within yourself.

Since the colonization of Canada began as New France, it has continuously been governed under a monarchical system of government. The British Crown was established as the governing authority in 1763 after the conquest of New France. Canadian confederation occurred in 1867 when a number of British colonies united to create the Dominion of Canada, but its inhabitants remained British subjects, and the Canadian government had limited control over its foreign affairs, with its constitutional document, the British North America Act, being an act of the British Parliament. The final link to the British parliament was severed in 1982 with the passage of the Constitution Act, 1982, formally establishing a Canadian-made constitutional system.

Indigenous women are among the hardest hit by economic globalization-the expansion of markets, trade liberalization and cheapening of labor-and that globalization represents a multifaced violence against indigenous women.

John Boyd was an Irish Protestant who came to St. John, New Brunswick as a young boy. He became a businessman, office holder, and politician but was best known as a good speaker and made a habit of speaking, often his speeches were later published in contemporary journals of the time. He was part of the temperance movement. This speech is of interest to give a certain perspective on Québec's history and current status.

This children's book from 1919 was published in Boston as part of a series of books including Our Little Bulgarian Cousin and Our Little French Cousin. The series introduces a child to us and places them in a their city as a pretext to explain the history and sites of the region. While trying to familiarize Americans with other cultures and religions, such as Our Little Bulgarian Cousin, Our Little African cousin and Our Little Jewish Cousins also serve as revealing windows into the cultural climate and stereotypes that pervaded this era.

This guide was published in 1864 by Hunter, Rose & Co., and authored by Godfrey O'Brien begins, "Québec the present capital of Canada" gives a valuable historical sketch of Quebec in the mid 19th century. It has sections on such diverse sites as the Jesuits' Barracks, Wesleyan Methodist Church, Québec Seminary and Laval University, the Jail, the Skating Rink, Indian Lorette, the Masonic Hall, St. Bridget's Asylum, Monument "aux Braves", the Ladies Protestant Home, and Trip to the Saguenay.

A national Indigenous organization representing political voices of Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations—on and off reserve, status and non-status, disenfranchised—Inuit, and Métis. We were founded on a collective goal to enhance, promote, and foster the social, economic, cultural, and political well-being of Indigenous women in their respective communities and Canadian societies.

For over 40 years the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal Inc. (NFCM) has provided continuous quality services to the urban Indigenous population of Montreal and their families and is the only comprehensive service and referral point in the Greater Montreal Area (GMA) in relation to health, social services, legal, orientation/information, education, training, and employment referral for those migrating to or through the city including those from across Quebec, Canada, and the Americas.

Working alone or with various assistants, soliciting donations and support from diverse sources including President Theodore Roosevelt and the railroad tycoon John Pierpont Morgan, and also accumulating a heavy personal debt, Curtis visited more than eighty tribes across the country, and north into Alaska and parts of Canada. Eventually, he took more than 40,000 photographs; made over 10,000 recordings of Native speech and music; produced lectures, slide shows, and a multi-media Curtis Indian Picture Opera throughout the U.S.; and in 1914 directed In the Land of the Headhunters, an inventive, seminal film documentary on the Kwakiutl tribe.

Wendake is the only community in Canada where we find the Huron-Wendat Nation. From time immemorial, the Huron-Wendat have occupied the estuary and the valley of the St. Lawrence, our majestic Grande Rivière, up to the Great Lakes region. It was the Huron-Wendat Grand Chief Donnacona who welcomed explorer Jacques Cartier to Stadacona during his journey in search of the Indies in the 1530s.

The term "toponym" generally refers to reserves, Indian lands, establishments or other land bases. The choice of a name belongs to the community, which explains unilingual presentation of certain names. The term "residents" means that the persons reside in the community to which they are affiliated. The term "non-residents" means that the persons do not reside in the community to which they are affiliated.

A flagship event for artistic creation and the cultural renaissance of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the world. A place of creation, encounters and discoveries, the multidisciplinary event unfolds over ten days in August. Norval Morrisseau's entrance into the art world in the early 1960s marked the first time that a First Nations artist was recognized in the art market. His parents were Anishinaabe and he was born in Ontario. He learned shamanic pictography traditionally incised on birchbark from his grandfather. He saw his artwork as a continuation of the shamans' scrolls.

In 2021 the Canadian government passed legislation to create the federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation– which is on September 30, the same day as Orange Shirt Day. Both anniversary dates commemorate the experiences of survivors of Canadian residential schools for First Nations, Inuit and Métis children. Orange Shirt Day, created by former residential school survivors, long predates the Canadian federal holiday.

In 1948, the Canadian Parliament had sufficient concerns about the health of students at residential schools across Canada to recommend they be shut down. In Quebec, however, the system was just getting started. At the time, there were only two residential schools — both at Fort George on James Bay. But there was growing interest in exploiting natural resources in the central part of the province, which required the displacement and settlement of Indigenous communities. In the years that followed, the federal government founded four residential schools in Quebec, three under the management of the Roman Catholic Church and the fourth operated by the Anglicans. Residential schools opened in Sept-Îles in 1952, Amos in 1955, Pointe-Bleue in 1960 and La Tuque in 1962. Often, the openings coincided with the establishment of new First Nations reserves.

This site contains a list of schools and institutions recognized in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA). There are some schools that do not contain a list of student names. This means that at present, we have no record of children having died as a result of their time at that school. There is a significant amount of work still to be done to ensure no child is forgotten. The Festival d'été de Québec is the most important outdoor musical event in Canada, right in the heart of Quebec City. It is an 11-day music festival that takes place every year. The festival features various bands and genres like rock, electronic music, punk, hip-hop, classical music, world music and more.

Founded in 1979 by Alain Simard, in association with André Ménard, Denyse McCann and Alain de Grosbois, the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal (FIJM) is a non-profit organization. The FIJM’s mission is to promote and popularize jazz and its related musical forms by making it more accessible to the general public and supporting the development of artists. For over 40 years, the FIJM has been synonymous with musical passion. It is the largest cultural event in Montreal and one of the most important in the world in its field, representing a real engine for the national and international cultural scene due to its four decades of experience and artistic commitment! Every summer, the Festival brings the city to life by hosting thousands of artists over a period of ten days, with concerts on nearly a dozen free outdoor stages on a site that is unique in the world, designed to meet all the needs of festival-goers, and in nearly a dozen downtown venues.

Thirteen days of emotions and discoveries, with no time difference: nearly 700 artists from 30 countries from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, with more than 150 concerts and activities, 6 days of free outdoor programming, on the Parterre du Quartier des spectacles and on the brand new Esplanade Tranquille A cultural destination full of authenticity and festive fun for the whole family! The 36th edition offered a program composed of charismatic artists such as Lindigo and his maloya from Reunion Island and Fabiana Cozza from Brazil, unique sounds and trance moments with Moktar Gania & Gnawa Soul and the astonishing Ifriqiyya Électrique, both from Morocco, dazzling musical and visual performances with Ghetto Kumbé from Colombia, memorable musical encounters between artists from here and elsewhere, such as Derek Gripper (South Africa) in trio with Zal Sissokho (Senegal-QC) and Djely Tapa (Mali-QC). Among our favorites and those of the public, the series dedicated to women where artists carrying cultures and modernity stood out: Okan (Cuba-Ont.), Manou Gallo (Ivory Coast), Joyce N’Sana (Congo-Qc), Dobet Gnahoré (Ivory Coast), Lara Klaus (Brazil-Qc) and Naxx Bitota (Congo-Qc), on the Loto-Quebec stage of the Esplanade Tranquille. The performance of Kobo Town (Trinidad-On), the charisma that Sampa The Great (Zambia) ensured the grand finale of this 36th edition.

The 1989 Neptune Plaza Concert Series Collection consists of manuscript and print materials, audio recordings, and graphic materials that document the 1989 concert series sponsored by the American Folklife Center. The annual series, which began in 1977, features the presentation of folk traditions from many cultures. The concerts take place on the Neptune Plaza at the front of the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress between April and September. Adverse weather conditions sometimes force the concerts indoors. The 1989 series was produced with the assistance of the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Concerts were broadcast live on WAMU-FM, hosted by Dick Spottswood.

On his first trip to the New World, in 1534, explorer Jacques Cartier found a rich land inhabited by Huron and Iroquois Indians. He promptly claimed it for France. Cartier gave the name “Canada” (from an Iroquois word for “town”) to the area around the Iroquois village of Stadacona, on the banks of the St. Lawrence river. In 1608, the first permanent French colonists established Québec city in the same location, bringing their songs and music with them.

Canuck (Kanuck) is a term believed to have originated in America, possibly as a derogatory term (initially) to refer to Canadians and especially French Canadians. It has now been embraced for the most part and is widely recognized as the name of a Hockey team in Vancouver, Canada.

Nomadic Massive raps and sings in English, French, Creole, Spanish and Arabic. This Montreal based multilingual crew has always pushed its message past all borders. In 2004, the collective made up of solo artists was created in Montreal in order to participate in a hip hop Festival in Havana, Cuba. In 2005, the group launched its first EP, entitled Nomad’s Land. The record was critically acclaimed in the local and international scene, and thanks to their dynamic shows, Nomadic Massive started to create it’s very own niche.

Beginning in the 1920s, Madame Edouard Bolduc (or more commonly known as “La Bolduc”) began performing and recording folk tunes that quickly swept across the province. She sings and plays either the violin or the guimbarde, a mouth-harp common in traditional Québécois musical traditions. One traditional trademark you’ll hear in many of her songs is the rhythmic vocal improvisation of vocables (or “nonsense-syllables”) known as turlutage, often during the refrains, a feature such contemporary hip-hop groups as Loco Locass continue to employ these days. Though stemming from her roots in French-Canadian and Irish folk music, she is often recognized as one of the first singer/songwriters of Québec, and the first musician to begin fusing these styles with French and American popular music.

According to singer Alexander Zelkin, there was "an awakening of Québec's consciousness of its own culture" at the time of La Belle Province Québec's release, manifested both in the arts and political movements: Zelkin characterizes the province as tied to its French roots more than to Canada. The album, which was originally released by Monitor Records in 1990, features Zelkin and Denise Bérard performing modern arrangements of French-Canadian folk music, with instrumental accompaniment. The liner notes include both the French lyrics and Zelkin's commentary in English.

The fiddle was used to animate dancers at the bals of Québec. These social dance events featured dances brought from Europe like the contredanse, the quadrille, the cotillon and in the late 19th century, the waltz and polka. Though the bals were based in high-society, people living in rural areas and/or lower economic classes adopted these dances as well. Québécois social dancing, inspired by European traditions, also drew from Celtic influences brought by early Scottish and Irish settlers. The gigue, a traditional Québécois form of stepdancing, derived from these Celtic precedents and inspired a host of tunes, often called gigues, that brought out the best in stepdancers.
