African American Periodicals, 1825-1995 features more than 170 wide-ranging periodicals by and about African Americans. Published in 26 states, the publications include academic and political journals, commercial magazines, institutional newsletters, organizations' bulletins, annual reports and other genres. These diverse periodicalswhich have shaped, and in turn been shaped by, African American culturewill enable new discoveries on lives of African Americans as individuals, as an ethnic group and as Americans. Like African American Newspapers, 1827-1998, this new collection is based upon James P. Danky's monumental African-American Newspapers and Periodicals: A National Bibliography. Drawn from matchless holdings of the Wisconsin Historical Society, African American Periodicals ranges over more than 150 years of American life, from slavery during the Antebellum Period to the struggles and triumphs of the modern era. Beyond offering opinions on issues and events of the day, the rare titles in African American Periodicals capture the voices of African American social, political, religious, literary and business history. Hispanic American Newspapers, 1808-1980, represents the single largest compilation of Spanish-language newspapers printed in the U.S. during the 19th and 20th centuries. The distinctive collection features hundreds of Hispanic American newspapers, including many long scattered and forgotten titles published in the 19th century. It is based on the “Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project,” a national research effort directed by Nicolás Kanellos, Brown Foundation Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston. Including many newspapers published bilingually in Spanish and English, Hispanic American Newspapers, 1808-1980, offers a diversity of unabridged voices, ranging from intellectuals and literary notables to politicians, union organizers and grassroots figures. Available online for the first time, these American newspapers published by Hispanics can now be easily browsed, searched and read. Users can compare and contrast Hispanic views on nearly every major theme in American life, beginning in 1808 when the first Spanish-language newspaper in the United States was printed in New Orleans.

• Chicago Defender (1909-1975) -A leading African-American newspaper, with more than two-thirds of its readership outside Chicago.
• Cleveland Call & Post (1934-1991) -Founded by Garrett Morgan, inventor of the gas mask and traffic light. Contributors included noted journalists Charles H. Loeb and John Fuster. The newspaper is well known for its support of the Scottsboro trial defendants with letters, clothing, stamps, and donations to the defense fund.
• Los Angeles Sentinel (1934-2005) -The oldest and largest black newspaper in the western United States and the largest African-American owned newspaper in the U.S.
• New York Amsterdam News (1922-1993) -This leading Black newspaper of the 20th century reached its peak in the 1940s. The Amsterdam News was a strong advocate for the desegregation of the U.S. military during World War II, and also covered the historically important Harlem Renaissance.
• The Norfolk Journal and Guide (1921-2003) -This was the only black newspaper to provide on-the-scene, day-to-day coverage of the Scottsboro trial, and was one of the best researched and well written black newspapers of its time. The
• Philadelphia Tribune (1921-2001) -The oldest continuously published black newspaper is dedicated to the needs and concerns of the fourth largest black community in the U.S. During the 1930s the paper supported the growth of the United Way, rallied against the riots in Chester, PA, and continuously fought against segregation.
  
• Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002) -One of the most nationally circulated Black newspapers, the Courier reached its peak in the 1930s. A conservative voice in the African-American community, the Courier challenged the misrepresentation of African-Americans in the national media and advocated social reforms to advance the cause of civil rights.

Sourced from the records of the Race Relations Department of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, housed at the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans, this resource provides access to a wealth of documents highlighting different responses to the challenges of overcoming prejudice, segregation and racial tensions.
