Racial, Ethnic, and Religious Minorities in the United States Civil War: A Resource Guide

Published, printed materials detailing military and civilian participation in the American Civil War are found here. Racial, ethnic, cultural and religious groups are represented. Selected unit histories, veteran memoirs, and studies of the war's impact on immigrant and racial minority soldiers make up the greatest part of this guide. Books about the war's effects on immigrant and minority civilians are also presented. Included works on or by prominent individuals include biographies/memoirs of General Patrick Cleburne, Frederick Douglass, General Thomas Meagher, General Ely Parker, General Franz Sigel, Robert Smalls, Harriet Tubman, Loreta Janeta Velazquez and General Stand Watie.

Individuals who remained citizens of foreign countries are included in each cultural group when identified.
