In Ellison's book collection are the thousands of heavily used volumes that his friends saw lining the walls of the Ellison apartment on Riverside Drive at the edge of Harlem. Most of this personal library consists of volumes of American and modern literature and literary criticism, theory, and biography. Another group includes the many translations of Ellison's works and first editions of his friends' works.
There are inscribed first editions of his friends' works, including those by Saul Bellow, John Berryman, Langston Hughes, William Meredith, Toni Morrison, Leopold Sedar Senghor, William Styron, Genevieve Taggard, Melvin Beaunorus Tolson, Robert Penn Warren, Richard Wilbur, and Richard Wright.
Ellison's copy of the first edition of his Invisible Man is inscribed "Ralph Ellison, my own copy." He signed his first edition of Faulkner's Go Down Moses and inserted pages of notes in his worn, paperback edition of Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson. Other volumes from Ellison's working library deal with music, jazz, plays and theater, antiques and collectibles, and African Art. There are also books about Ellison or with contributions by him, and he saved many issues of periodicals such as "Black Dispatch," the "Negro Quarterly" and "New Masses".
The Ellison book library is displayed in a special alcove of the restored Great Hall in the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, adjacent to the only other personal libraries displayed, those of Oliver Wendell Homes and Woodrow Wilson (see photograph at right).
Books in the collection can be found by searching the Library of Congress Online Catalog for "Ralph Ellison Collection (Library of Congress)" as a phrase.
In addition, there is a Finding Aid that provides in-depth descriptions of portions of the collection:
The Collection consists of books owned by Ellison as well as journals and ephemera. The Library of Ralph Ellison Collection includes bibliographic description of books from Ralph Ellison's rooms as well as information about those books that are not displayed in the rooms.
