This print volume, available in the Library of Congress Main Reading Room, is meant to be used in conjunction with the microfiche collection under the same title, the printed guides provide access through three principal approaches to the information: chronological, author/title, and by contributing institution.

Based on the Incunabula Short Title Catalog (ISTC) at the British Library External, this microfiche collection reproduces full-text editions of incunabula from libraries around the world. The texts are arranged around subject themes, such as: law, medicine, philosophy, classical texts in translation, romances, geography, cosmography and journeys of discovery, chronicles and historiography, and provide for the study of early book production in the first stages of European printing. Accompanied by printed guides which include a detailed listing of contents drawn from the ISTC, bibliographical information, and an introductory essay which describes the selection criteria and editorial focus of the unit, and provides an informative outline of the subject.
