For researchers hoping to copy and publish images from the Hunt Collection, information about how to assess rights to images in the collection and how to obtain both reference and quality copies is provided below.
There are no known restrictions on drawings, photographs, and other archival materials created by Richard Morris Hunt.
Access: Permitted; subject to P&P policy on serving originals.
Reproduction (photocopying, hand-held camera copying, photoduplication and other forms of copying allowed by "fair use"): Permitted; subject to P&P policy on copying.
Publication and other forms of distribution: There are no known restrictions on items created by Richard Morris Hunt. There were no restrictions placed on items which the Hunt family donated to the American Institute of Architects in 1926 and were transferred to the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division in 2010. Hunt collection does include images and other materials made by other people. Rights to those items must be evaluated individually for potential copyright restrictions. Privacy and publicity rights may apply, especially for plans and photographs of residences.

Reference Copies: Researchers can photograph with a hand-held camera. Due to the fragility of the items, use of our copy machine is not allowed for this collection. No personal scanners are permitted in the reading room. You can find general Photography Policies in the Using the Reading Room section in the Prints & Photographs Reading Room website.
Quality Copies: You may purchase quality scans of individual items through Library of Congress Duplication Services. In placing an order, researchers should cite call number (Unprocessed in PR 13 CN 2010:100 (Hunt)), item information (title of the drawings, photographs, sketchbooks, etc.), and accession number if available (e.g. 79.1234; p80.5678), preferably with a reference copy to ensure accurate fulfillment of the request.
Digitized Images: Researchers can download existing digital files.
