Science Through Pop Culture: A Research Guide

Sports

John Schuller, artist. New York fashions for March 1870 / Hatch & Co. 1870. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.

When we think of sports, we think of a team running across a field and the roar of the crowd. What we don’t think about is the science behind each of the sports that we love. The speed of the ball thrown from the mound, the spin on the bowling ball as it rolls down the alley and the physics behind the spiral of a football thrown down the field. The science behind all these sports plays a major role in determining a good player from a great player.
