Library of Congress Science Tracer Bullet Inventory (1972-2013)

Tracer Bullets: 1981-1990

The 1980s saw the creation of more extensive guides in the Science Tracer Bullet series, and the update of many that had been previously published. In the decade, 113 guides were produced in response to user requests and headline science and technology news.

The year 1981 saw the launch of a new type of space flight with NASA's new reusable spaceship, the Columbia. The Library of Congress responded to numerous queries on Manned Space Flight with a guide on that topic. That decade also saw the immense disaster of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.

Other technology news in the 1980s included the 1984 Cable Act, higher computing power, the new IBM personal computer, and the introduction of the Apple computer. The Science Reference Section responded with the creation of guides on cable television and personal computing. Other headline environmental and medical news led to guides on Halocarbons and the Stratospheric Ozone Layer, Acid Rain, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and Alzheimer's Disease.

In 1981, seventeen Science Tracer Bullets were produced. Links to digitized versions on HathiTrust Digital Library or the Internet Archive Wayback Machine are included when available.
