Tracer Bullets: 2001-2010

With the introduction of the Internet the Science Tracer Bullet had to adapt from print to an online format. While still being produced as a print product, the bibliographies were also available online, and were more readily updatable. This was of great benefit to some of the products, such as the Science Fair series, which had many updates. As guides were updated online they often may not have been re-issued as print products, which reduced the amount of new Tracer Bullets produced.

The decade saw great innovation in technologies for industry, entertainment, and the home. The year 2002 saw the introduction of the autonomous robot vacuum, the Roomba, from iRobot. The Global Positioning System (GPS) became a mainstream of industry and life when the Defense Department ended the purposeful degradation, which it had implemented in 1990. Seemingly overnight, GPS was implemented in all kinds of industries--from fishing to forestry to freight management. This development, and earlier navigation technologies, was highlighted in the Navigation Tracer Bullet. During the decade entertainment platforms and standards such as DVRs, MP3s, and other infotainment proliferated. Requests for information on booming technologies led to guides for Nanotechnology and VoIP/Internet Telephony. The decade also saw satellite systems for remote sensing. Disaster struck in February 2003 with the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia.

In the 1990s consumers, businesses, and governments expressed increasing concerns about the environment, energy efficiency, and energy security, leading to direct research in the following decades. Fuel cells were explored as one of several potential technologies capable of delivering energy efficiency and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Research on this topic can be found in a guide on Batteries, Supercapacitors, and Fuel Cells. Environmental issues and initiatives are explored in Tracer Bullets such as Global Warming and Climate Change, Green Roofs, Geothermal Energy, and Wind Power.
