Serbian Newspaper Bibliographies

Below are the sources that were used to verify bibliographic information for newspapers from Serbia and its diaspora. The first source consulted is the Library of Congress Online Catalog, but printed bibliographies also are useful. The most comprehensive print title on this topic is Srpska štampa 1768-1995. Istorijsko-bibliografski pregled by Milica Kisić, listed below. Srpska bibliografija. Periodika 1768-2005, planned as a five-volume set, will be the most comprehensive bibliography when it is completed. To date, only the first volume, covering titles from A-G, has been published. The most comprehensive online source is the online catalog of the National Library of Serbia External in Beograd. The bibliographies are listed in order of relevance to the topic, with titles devoted to specific regions or subjects at the end.

This historical overview and bibliography of Serbian-language newspapers and periodicals also covers Montenegro. It has a long introductory essay on the Serbian press. The bibliography is divided into five eras -- 1768-1868, 1869-1918, 1919-1941, 1941-1944, 1945-1995. Within each section the entries are arranged alphabetically by title. There are indexes for titles in Serbian and titles in foreign languages.

Only one volume has been published so far, Knjiga 1, A-G. It is held in the Serbian section of the European Reading Room reference collection. Entries are arranged alphabetically by title. When this set is completed, it will be the most comprehensive source in print on Serbian newspapers and journals.
