A selection of digitized papers of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) held in the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress span the years from about the 6th century B.C.E. (a small Greek statue) to 1998, with the bulk of material dating from 1871 to 1939. The digitized collection documents Freud's founding of psychoanalysis, the maturation of psychoanalytic theory, the refinement of its clinical technique, and the proliferation of its adherents and critics. Many facets of Freud's life and work are reflected, including his early medical and clinical training; his relationship with family, friends, colleagues, students, and patients; his association with early psychoanalytic societies; his perspectives on analytical training; and his numerous writings.

This online exhibition features features vintage photographs, prints, manuscripts and first editions. Also displayed are home movies of Freud and objects from his study and consulting room--including materials from his desk, the chair in which he sat when listening to patients, a model of his consulting couch, and pieces from his own collection of antiquities. Selected film and television clips, and materials from newspapers, magazines and comic books are interwoven throughout the exhibition to highlight the pervasive influence of psychoanalysis on popular culture. Exhibit items are drawn largely from the collections of the Library of Congress, supplemented with loans from other important holdings, especially those of the Sigmund Freud-Museum in Vienna, and the Freud Museum in London.

The Sigmund Freud Archives, Inc. is an independent, non-profit organization. The mission of the Archives is to advance the study of Sigmund Freud's life, career, and ideas, and to promote research into the development of psychoanalysis and the history of science and culture during Freud's lifetime. The collections are now housed in the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1951, the Sigmund Freud Archives has assembled and preserved the largest and most wide-ranging collections of manuscripts, papers, correspondence, and biographical materials from Sigmund Freud's life and work, and has made them accessible to readers and researchers worldwide. The collections include manuscript drafts and notes, personal, family, and general correspondence, films and photographs, professional writings and notebooks, and memorabilia and records related both to Freud's biography and to the history of psychoanalysis. They contain audiotaped interviews with Freud's family, friends, colleagues, and patients, together with transcripts of those interviews.

Part of the library of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, is housed in Archives & Special Collections of the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library at Columbia University. The library consists of 770 titles dating from 1554 to 1938 and is rich in 19th and early 20th century psychiatry, neurology and psychoanalysis.
