Slovenian Newspapers in the Library of Congress

Online Newspapers from Slovenia

Detroit Publishing Company. General View of Marburg (i.e., Maribor). Between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division.

The Library of Congress has almost no online newspapers from Slovenia. News sources such as Internet portals, news magazines, and newswires are available through several databases, but almost all of the sources are in English. PressReader has two Slovenian newspapers in the vernacular.

The most useful way to obtain the latest news and information in the vernacular from and about Slovenia is to visit the websites of current Slovenian newspapers. To identify current newspapers, use some kind of portal such as W3Newspapers External. For information in English, try using websites of major newspapers outside of the country such as the New York Times, the Times of London, or the Washington Post. The Library of Congress has these three and many other English-language newspapers in its subscription database collection.

Fortunately, many libraries in Slovenia and Central Europe have digitized historical newspapers from Slovenia. Some of the larger sites are described below in the section on Digitized Newspapers, with the most notable being COBISS Union Catalog of Slovenian Libraries External.

Subscription Databases

Subscription resources marked with a padlock are available to researchers on-site at the Library of Congress. If you are unable to visit the Library, you may be able to access these resources through your local public or academic library.
