South Asian Newspapers at the Library of Congress

This research guide contains lists of the Library’s South Asian newspapers available in the Asian Reading Room (South Asian languages) and the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room (English), as well as select titles available through e-resources.

Introduction

Gujarātī [microform] = The Gujarati. Cover of January 2, 1881 issue. Library of Congress Asian Division.

This guide contains country-wise listings of the Library's South Asian newspapers by title, city of publication, language, and format. Newspapers in South Asian languages (e.g., Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and many more) are accessible in the Asian Reading Room (Jefferson Building, LJ-150). Most English-language newspapers are accessible in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room (Madison Building, LM-133), while a few are located in the Main Reading Room (Jefferson Building, LJ-100) or the Microform and Electronic Resources Center (Jefferson Building, LJ-139).

In terms of format, most newspapers are available on microfilm with selected older publications available in print. While the collection includes some newspapers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, it is especially rich following the establishment of the Library's overseas field offices in India in 1962 and Pakistan in 1965. The collection also continues to grow with approximately 70 titles with current subscriptions.

For information on digital access to South Asian newspapers, see this guide’s page on the select newspaper titles available through freely available and subscription e-resources.

If you have questions about a particular newspaper or other South Asian materials, please contact Asian Division reference staff through Ask a Librarian.

This research guide is the product of the work by the Asian Division's South Asia reference staff along with important contributions from Andrew Kerr, volunteer working with the South Asian collection during the spring of 2019, and Iris Yellum, Library of Congress Junior Fellow during the summer of 2019.
