This is a guide to the Asian Division's collection of more than 275 newspapers on microfilm in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and other South Asian languages. All of these titles are accessible on microfilm readers in the Asian Reading Room in the Jefferson Building. English-language newspapers from South Asia are accessible in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room in the Madison Building.
While most of the titles in South Asian languages covered in this guide are newspapers, there are several literary magazines and other serial publications. Some of these titles have additional holdings in print, which are discoverable in the Library of Congress Online Catalog. If you have questions about a particular newspaper or other materials in the South Asian collection, you can contact South Asia reference staff through the Asian Division's Ask-a-Librarian.
This guide is the product of the work by the Asian Division's South Asia reference staff along with important contributions from Andrew Kerr, volunteer working with the South Asian collection during the spring of 2019, and Iris Yellum, Library of Congress Junior Fellow during the summer of 2019.
The Asian Reading Room provides public access to more than 4 million items in approximately 200 languages and dialects from across Asia, including Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Thai, Tibetan, Urdu, Vietnamese, and many others. In the reading room, researchers can use the Asian Division’s collections of printed materials, microform, and databases and confer with reference librarians to answer research questions about the countries of East, South, and Southeast Asia.
