4.19 Revolution Protest - Citizens and Children Holding T'aegukgi in the Streets, 1960. Kyŏnghyang Sinmunsa.
The protests arising from the February 28 Taegu Student Movement and the March 15 Masan Demonstration, fueled by the rigged election on March 15, served as the catalysts for the April 19 Revolution. In response to the widespread civic resistance against the unfair election orchestrated by President Syngman Rhee's Liberal Party, this movement unfolded on a national scale, led by students and intellectuals, as a collective stand against Syngman Rhee's authoritarianism and corrupt government. The victory of the April 19 Revolution resulted in the resignation of Syngman Rhee, marking the inauguration of the Second Republic. This pivotal moment also paved the way for diverse discussions on reunification.
